The bad news is that PowerPoint’s Save Image option (in the File dialog box) does not allow you to preserve the transparent background when saving slides. But the good news is that we can use the “Save as Image” option in the graphic or shape view to save it with 100% transparency.
For this example, let’s look at one of the templates available from SlideModel.com, one of my favorite PowerPoint template providers. They offer high-quality PowerPoint templates that are 100% editable, so presenters and designers have “full control” to customize the slides to suit their needs. This is definitely one of the main advantages of using editable templates and graphics created with PowerPoint formats, compared to other providers or even free PowerPoint templates that are not editable.

This solution was originally posted on Stackoverflow here. and as mentioned in the post, this technique also works for Word Art graphics, meaning you can use PowerPoint to create multiple slides with text effects created with Word Art and then export them for use in any other tool. At the top of my answer I was talking about how to get a transparent background for your .png as opposed to a white background because you clearly asked – in your comment to my answer you added a secondary constraint with a misunderstanding built into it: that you also want to crop or crop just the borders of your shapes – and maybe when you refer to “space” in your OP, you don’t really mean to ask about white vs. transparency, but maybe just a “wasted space for composition” question. .this is best edited in Photoshop before exporting the composition using the Image>Crop… Transparent Pixels command.
I hope I have now covered both the transparency issue and the excess space issue and you should be ready to rock and roll.
