Valspar Chalky Finish Paint Lowes – To my surprise, Lowe’s recently discontinued the Valspar Chalky Finish Paint, which I recommended in one of my favorite paint tutorials.

I’m here to test how it transfers to Krylon wood, how I think it works, and whether I think it’s a good substitute for Valspar chalk paint.

Okay, talk about disappointment when I found out that Lowe’s Home Improvement dropped a product that I recommended and loved.

Painting this dingy piece of furniture was a huge makeover, but I love how it completely changed the look of the bookcase and the room.

I am under no obligation to ensure that I can update this tutorial with new crayon color options with confidence.

Before purchasing Krylon from Lowe’s Home Improvement, I sincerely hoped it would be a good alternative to Valspar Chalky Finish Paint.

Why I think it might be because Sherwin Williams bought Valspar and Krylon is one of their brands.

FYI, I worked at Valspar for 5 years in a group that trained Lowe’s painters… so I know a thing or two about paint 🙂

Testing Krylon Chalk Top Paint with my original pot of Valspar Chalk Top Paint:

I bought a piece of craft wood for this test to see how the paint would cover dark wood.

Plus, the heavy wood grain gave me a good test to see how the paint would actually cover the wood.

The good news is that I can definitely recommend Krylon Chalky Finish Paint as a direct replacement for Valspar Chalky Finish Paint.

This is great because now you have a wide selection of chalk paints that you can dye in thousands of colors, or you can just buy ready-made pre-colored paints.

Cream In My Coffee Interior & Exterior Paint

Painting with chalk is a little different than normal painting, so I’ll give some of my general tips.

Many Annie Sloan or Amy Howard fans will argue with me, so decide for yourself which product is best for your project. I’ve been slowly rearranging the furniture in my house as most of it is showing wear and tear from the move. door to door. I buy almost all used furniture so I don’t mind experimenting with colors and textures. After years of using Annie Sloan paints, I decided to try Valspar Chalk Paint.

I love Annie Sloan chalk strokes, but it’s very expensive. Quarters at my local store are about $51. When I found out that Valspar makes chalk strokes, I was excited to try it out. The Valspar Chalk Paint, in particular, is $29.99 at Lowes.

Valspar chalk strokes have expanded their range of colors since I first started painting with their chalk strokes. I tried beaded reticles, dress gloves, wool socks, sunday hustle, dress gloves, and white.

One thing I’ve noticed about the Valspar chalk paint is that the color doesn’t exactly match the paint chips in the store. I recently bought a can of Dress Gloves because I thought it was similar to navy blue. It’s more like Saturday’s college football blue. (see bookshelf photo below)

Since I usually mix the colors of the chalk strokes to create my own, it’s not a big deal. However, if you are looking for a color card match, you will be disappointed.

The great thing about Valspar paint (besides the price) is that you can buy it at Lowes. Annie Sloan crayons are sold in smaller stores that may not always be near where you live.

I tried Valspar on several pieces of furniture. One is this little side table we picked up for free a few years ago. We bought a sofa set off Craig’s List and when my husband went to get it they asked if we wanted the table because he was going to get rid of it anyway.

The graph has always been a bit simple, but I’m not motivated enough to change it. After finishing the kitchen, I was inspired to transform this small table.

I chose the Sunday Bustle because I liked the color on the back of the cage and *thought* it would be similar.

I created a chalk paint color in my cabin by mixing Annie Sloan Florence and Aubussen blue. When I think Sunday Bustle will be similar, I’m just saying I’m digressing too far. I should have worn the sapphire bracelet!

Sunday Bustle was more of a Caribbean blue which was nice but not the table I was looking for. (see blue bookshelf)

What’s Chalky Paint And Why Is Everyone Talking About It?

Valspar Chalk Paint goes on smoothly and has good coverage. I didn’t sand the table, I just wiped it down and cleaned off any sticky residue left by the kids. Sanding is my go-to tool for chalk sketch projects, so I’m glad Valspar continues to cover wood with ease.

Since I painted the darker color on the darker furniture, it was hard to tell how the light color would cover the darker furniture without prep.

I ended up doing two coats on the bottom of the table and three coats on top. There are a few places where the paint isn’t adhering very well, but I’m not sure why.

The knob was originally wood, but I didn’t want it to be the same color as the rest of the table. I removed the knob and sprayed it with Rust-Oleum Hammered Bronze.

Do you have painted knobs and pulls? Replacement buttons are very expensive. A can of spray paint at the hardware store is usually less than $6, and you can update the fixtures on a few pieces of furniture and get a whole new look!

I haven’t bought buttons in years since I discovered this cheap trick! Lowes, Home Depot, and Amazon offer numerous “metal look” paint options. I have painted almost all the metalwork in my house, but I digress.

When using Valspar Chalk paint, it should be noted that a 4-6 hour interval between coats is recommended. If you’re an impatient painter like me, it’s too long! Another thing I like about Annie Sloan is that you can apply a second coat almost instantly, which means you can finish a small project like this table in a few hours.

The Valspar Chalky Finish dries much faster than I expected and I gave it a second coat about an hour after the first coat.

Since the color was too light, I used a darker wax to darken it a bit. When using dark wax, it can be applied directly to the paint, or a layer of clear wax can be applied first. If a dark wax is applied directly to the paint, it will absorb quickly and really change the color.

You can apply the wax with a clean cloth, such as a microfiber cloth, or with a scrub. Don’t skimp on scrubbing. It pays to invest in a higher-quality face brush so you don’t lose hair while you’re at work.

I applied a layer of clear wax to the side table, followed by a dark wax. I ended up buying a buffer brush that attaches to your cage because I have a lot of painting projects this summer.

The dark wash really brings out the light blue and I’m happy with this little table. I thought it went from boring to trendy and it only took an afternoon to update it.

These chairs are from a thrift store and I bought them for $40 earlier this year. I plan on fixing them, but they look great under the new tabletop paint.

After liking how my side table turned out, I turned to my daughter’s bedroom furniture. I used Valspar Woolen Gray and coral paint left over from a previous project.

Even on tabletops, chalk paint provides excellent coverage. Instead of using wax to seal the paint on the bedroom furniture, I used a clear coat of polyurethane.

I’ve started using clear coat on any furniture with a bad finish and it seems to outlast wax.

Krylon Chalk Paint Video Review

After using Valspar Chalk paint on several pieces of furniture, I definitely recommend it. If you’re familiar with Annie Sloan, you’ll notice the subtle difference.

Annie Sloan is easier, but Valspar definitely does the job and is much less expensive. Worth a try. I get messages on a semi-regular basis asking how to paint furniture. I always have a two pronged answer. First, what are you trying to accomplish? A shiny clean look? Or a more rustic distressed rug look? Then I asked what kind of furniture it was. Isn’t it something super shiny and ready to go?
