To be successful at DIY deck building, all you need are some basic woodworking tools and a willingness to invest some equity.
The deck shown here has a pressure-treated floor frame supported by a concrete log frame and piers, covered with 5/4″. Since the deck is only a step high, the -no railings are needed. Now follow Tom’s advice and create your own backyard oasis. This is a great way to make your neighbors jealous.
Level platforms – built above the ground – do not require poles, steps or handrails. But it has the same structural elements as any deck—ledges, beams, girders, and posts. The construction of a building begins with the determination of the dimensions of the frame material.
How I Built My Diy Floating Deck For Less Than $500
Tom Silva uses these general rules: For framing beams or beams made of 2x bent wood, the nominal width of the slab in inches must match the span in feet. So a 10′ end beam requires two 2×10’s. Ledgers are made of veneer of the same width. For the interior joists, Tom halved the span and added two 8-foot joists for 2 x 6. (In all cases, odd numbers or fractions are rounded to the even number next.)
Run building trim and siding 1 foot above the top where the register will be. Cover exposed cladding with a self-adhesive waterproof membrane.
Mark the exact location of the top of the register. (According to code, any step leading to a deck that sits above the register must be between 4 and 7¾ inches below the ceiling.) Draw a horizontal chalk line.
Cut a treated wood spacer 2 inches wide by 1.5 inches thick for each 2-foot length of log. Align the top of each spacer with the plaster line and secure it with 6d nails.

Align the book with the top of the spacer and nail to the wall in each spacer with 16d nails. (The joints between the register boards must be dropped into spacers.)
Drill a 3⅜-inch pilot hole through the register and into the end beams of the house in each spacer, following a zigzag pattern. In each hole, insert a ½ inch screw and tighten it to the washer using an impact wrench or box wrench.
Fold the membrane along its center line to form a right angle. Apply it to the joints of the house register so that one leg covers the pads and the upper part of the register, and the other leg extends to the wall.
Cut a strip of flashing metal that is at least 6 inches wide and as long as the edge. (If more than one strip of burr is needed, overlap the edges 3 inches before placing them in the siliconized acrylic caulk.)

Attach hidden supports double flange rafter to the ends of the register and use nails support rafter flush with the bottom edge.
Set the stir plate and mason’s rope and determine the locations of the rail shoes at 8-foot intervals on the outside corners of the deck and front frame beams . Mark each spot and temporarily remove the mason’s rope.
At each shoe location, dig a hole wide enough to hold the shape of the shoe and deep enough to extend below the snow line.
Assemble the bottom form and pier according to the manufacturer’s instructions, then place one in each hole. Fill lightly.
Deck Joist Spacing And Span Chart
To determine the final height of each pier, draw a horizontal line from the top of the reefer to the pier tube. From this line, measure 1/16 inch for each foot of the dock for a house, plus the height of the beam from the edge and bottom of the post. Mark the form at this point. Repeat for each dock. Cut the dock tube at these marks.
Check the position of the abutments and adjust if necessary. Fill with concrete, using a shovel to eliminate air pockets (above). Let the concrete cure for a week.
Place a post base on the top of the pier, position it so that it does not disturb the rafter support, and mark its location. Remove the base of the post and use a hammer drill fitted with a masonry bit to drill holes in the embankment. Reposition the post base, insert the anchor bolts and tighten with an impact wrench. Repeat for each dock.
Cut 2x pressure-treated stock for double-sided frame beams and girders. Glue them with construction adhesive and nail on both sides with 12d nails, spaced 16 inches apart in a zigzag pattern.
