You know I’ve been trying different color products. I’m always looking for a great outdoor paint and stain! How do you know how to choose the right color? Today I hope I can shed some light on Valspar One Coat Exterior Stain and Sealer with an honest review.

You may notice that the product looks slightly different from the product image. I added some bead board to the top so it could be a potted planter.
My goal for this planter was to cover an old pump grinder. Remember when I previously added an outside table to cover the dirty grinding pump? Well I got tired of it and wanted something new.
After assembling the garden bed I had a big decision to make; To color or color to use.
I choose to buy Valspar exterior paint specifically for the top coat only. Is it lazy? Maybe but I want to try it.
Wood Stain & Sealer
Having said that I am always aware of “one coat coverage”. We will talk about this later in the post.
When I went to the hardware store to buy stain, I asked for a color chart. The sales lady pulled out a card from another Valspar product and said they could mix any of these special colors into the stain. There were about 25 different options on the card. I chose the color “Driftwood”.
If you look on their website under one-coat solid stain and sealer, you’ll find 63 colors for “solid” stain.
I’m sure the seller is right and you can mix multiple colors for the stain, but the color I chose on the paper didn’t match the color shown when I opened the can.
Arborcoat 640 Waterborne Exterior Solid Stain
I was looking for a neutral color that would go with everything. After all, the exterior color of my house is bright green.
When I first opened the can, I was surprised at how thick the consistency was! No joke, when I dipped my paintbrush into it, it felt like I was pulling on jello (maybe a little, but not terribly).
All that should be said is thick paint. I guess it has to be thick to be a “one coat” color, right?
It goes on smoothly and has good coverage. I can immediately see why a single coat is needed.

This is a subjective question. I think you can get away with just one coat of this product.
I could get away with one coat of paint on the sides of the planter but applied two coats to the top of the bead board. Can I have just one coat on top and it still look good? Yes, but there were obvious spots and I wanted full solid coverage.
Also, if it is obvious now, it will continue to fade over time (with all factors).
For one full coat stain and 2 coats for cornboard, I used 1/2 can (1 quart can).
Reserve® Interior Paint & Primer
Valspar One-Coat Hard Stain and Sealer is a great product with good coverage. They have a great selection of colors to choose from and it’s about the same price as other hard stains and sealers.
I will do a review in six months to show how this stain worked. Until then, I give this product two thumbs up!
