It used to be like that. A few weeks before this photo was taken, I took the furniture apart and washed it. The concrete is so dirty you can’t even tell if it has been washed.

One of the reasons I waited so long is because I wanted to do a lot of research before choosing the exact color. It was important to use something that would withstand the elements (even though it’s an enclosed patio, it’s open), and day-to-day operation was paramount. I used a Behr granite handle on a small piece of concrete in my backyard and it held up well for over a year. However, this wasn’t the look I wanted for the front, so I had to look elsewhere.

My plan was to make it look like wooden planks, like I did the painted ship walls in my bedroom. The other day I saw a video from another blogger on Instagram showing how well a painted concrete fence is holding up after two years. After I contacted her, I was sure to choose the color she used. It’s called Olympic Maximum and it’s actually a stain that has colors similar to paint.

I bought this polish in two colors. The dark shade is called corundum as shown below. The clear coat gallon doesn’t have a label on the top to identify the color so I can’t tell you the exact name, but I think it was Stonehedge.

After cleaning the porch thoroughly, I used masking tape to protect the house around it. My spray paint was perfect for this project, I couldn’t imagine painting it with a roller or brush. No matter how well you clean it, dirt and grime will remain on the roller. As my supervisor watched, I first sprayed a dark shade of paint. 🙂 He wasn’t happy to be inside that door.

This happened after the first coat was applied. You see, I have not yet climbed the concrete slab all over the house, but I have covered it with the second floor.

After the first coat had dried for about 6 or seven hours, I applied 1/8 inch thick masking tape over it. I was left with bugs on my bedroom walls and this helped me distribute them more evenly. You can use a ruler or measuring tape to do this. I used my husband’s laser level to polish the line on the porch floor. This helped fix the tape.

. I painted another thin layer of the same color over the masking tape with a small roller. This helps seal the tape and provides a more precise line.

After drying, it’s time for a second coat. Today I used my new Wagner Flexio 5000 sprayer. It is very similar to my Studio Pro sprayer, but they have improved a few key things. I am very satisfied with the new model.

I let it dry for a few hours until it was safe to walk on, then slowly began to peel off the frayed masking tape. Let me tell you, it was a great satisfaction. Here I have drawn the first two rows of tape. The concrete grooves look like wood, giving it a real look.

I will let the furniture dry for another 24 hours before I return it. Look what a difference this concrete stain has made on my patio!

Pretty much everything except my porch furniture was from a flea market and the wooden sign was DIY. I threw out the new floor mats. I first bought an outdoor rug for the bottom, then decided it needed another, so I found this welcome mat for the top. Layered quilts are a huge trend right now, so I went for this look and I have to say, I really like it.

I also added a mirror to the grid. This was also a flea market find. It was an old brown mirror that came out of the closet.

I first painted it with DecoArt Metallics gold and layered it with Fusion Mineral Paint in Holy Sage. I placed it among my vines for interest.

I couldn’t be happier with the painted porch. You can see that the lines are clear. The texture of the concrete made it somewhat difficult to get very sharp. Working with a flat surface and spraying paint, the lines come out beautifully, just like I painted my niece’s kitchen floor.

I think I’ll add more color with a few flowers, but overall the entrance is much nicer than before.
