We don’t have a design plan for our bedroom. Straight up, nothing. We’ve been walking around in the same laundry basket for 6 years, pushing the wrong pieces of nomadic furniture to the side. The walls are still the same beige color and all we really have is a bed and mismatched nightstands, not even a nightstand. Even though we’re done decorating most of the rest of the house (is anyone really “done” decorating a house?), our master bedroom is forever last on the list.

The only things we like here are Andrew’s bench, doors, ladder and bed. I’ve wanted nightstands for a while. I started hunting on Facebook Marketplace and ended up with an Ethan Allen 3 drawer nightstand and dry sink mini cabinet that I thought Andrew could use to hold all his watches (that’s all on his nightstand..literally 1582 hours). After painting and waxing, the dry sink cut out the part we both decided we didn’t want. It will marinate in the garage until further notice.
In the garage after removing the hardware and filling the holes. Collecting dust, cobwebs and who knows what. I wanted to go with black or charcoal nightstands and chose Chalked by Rustoleum.
. I know how to use the Homerite Super Finish Max sprayer and paint sprayer because I’m pretty good at painting furniture with a brush.
My usual (personal) problem with chalk paint and wax is that the paint is too thick and streaky (both on purpose), waxing a large piece to cover it evenly, takes too long, is hard to dry and polish . Usually, I stick to smaller pieces and crafts with chalk style paint. For me, the silky texture of the paint and wax is the biggest (and only) reason I tried using chalk style paint on these nightstands. If I didn’t have a chalk style paint sprayer I would have used a different type of paint.

Using any spray and stain – we’ve done a lot (like my mom’s latex painted house, kitchen cabinet paint, latex on the fireplace, poly acrylic on the counter, stain on the fence. , and thinned latex on the chair) but I’ve never sprayed anything with chalk style paint.
You don’t need to thin the chalk-style paint, but you can change the spray nozzle. I usually use a blue nozzle for everything, but for this thickness of paint I changed it to a color.
Instead. Don’t let the change scare you – use the tool that came with your kit or atomizer and unscrew the two parts and replace them. The Super Finish Max Sprayer is my favorite because it holds a lot of paint (no need to fill the cup for this project!), cleanup is simple (just rinse) and the nozzles are interchangeable (get all the technical details and other tips here) !
Fill the paint can with paint and screw the can onto the sprayer with the nozzle on the front. Plug it in and you’re good to go!

After filling the holes left by the odd handles, I sanded the whole thing down. After a good sweep, I taped off the areas I didn’t want painted with my favorite painter’s tape and kitchen trash cans.
Just as I finished spraying my drawers the rain started. They were dry enough that I put everything in, put the cabinet in place and let them hang out a bit from the rain cloud. A medium spray can is the perfect spray area to spray pieces and let them air dry in the backyard.
I like to spray everything long, slow, even passes. I usually start from the left (or top), start at the edge of the section I’m spraying and sweep to the right (or bottom) and the edge on that side.
Keep your wits about you and don’t spray anything like hairspray or spray. We’ve all willingly sprayed a can of paint…admit it.

Spraying this chalk style paint is just like spraying any other paint or stain. Because the paint is thick and the nozzle is large, the coats were a little thicker, but it took 2 coats to completely cover the nightstand, followed by a few touch ups. The finish I got with spray and chalk was amazing. It’s not eggshell, it’s just…soft.
After the paint has dried (you will want to indicate the curing time of your paints) you will need to seal it. You can spray it with polyacrylate (not polyurethane because it’s yellow) or wax. If you use clear glue, you will lose the texture of the chalk paint. I saw a can of chalk clear coat at the store but wasn’t sure what kind of finish it would give. If you try it, I’d love to know if it has a silky smooth texture like chalk paint! Whatever type of wax you use, read the label and follow the directions. I used a bottle of clear wax and Andrew’s old sock in a circular motion.
The material is my favorite. A really nice set of handles can look like a really cool pair of earrings or a nice bracelet. Something that unites them all. These mug shots are perfect against the charcoal gray color. And they’re better than the old grips that were available in 1989. Once dry, go ahead and attach the grips of your choice. I used them because they fit the existing holes. If you are unsure, bring the old equipment to a shop for inspection. There’s nothing worse than pulling home…with the wrong width holes!

Welcome back to GITG my friend! It’s furniture makeover day again with my blogging friends (you can check out their amazing projects at the end of this post) – and today I’m sharing a new look for a radio cabinet I repaired and painted a few years ago.

I got this part for only $20 (oh I wish I could find those prices now) but it was missing a lot of important parts!
This antique radio cabinet is everything, not even the back panel. Mr. GITG and I worked together to clean, sand, repair, cut new wood, assemble and then I painted them. Read the full guide and see all the photos here.

I also had to add a new magnetic closure to keep the door closed. Below is the view from the back after we added the shelves.
It was painted with Annie Sloan Provence paint, a gorgeous turquoise color, and then lightly distressed. I also used a light cream color for the shelves inside.
I thought this cabinet was so cute! I took it to market and didn’t sell it. After a while I took it to my booth and didn’t sell it… stuck at home and brought it home to move inventory.
It sat in my trailer for a few months along with a few other pieces. One day I opened up the trailer and looked inside… and some of the painted parts were basically ruined. I think it’s not traditional bleeding because it’s been so long, but a slight change in humidity or temperature (autumn season).

…and I didn’t leave the finished work in my trailer. This is a difficult lesson.
I was understandably disappointed and this cabinet went into my garage to sit for a long time for this month’s cabinet top project.
Not wanting to start over and start over, I chose a darker color this time. Get two of my free tutorials here, including how to properly prepare furniture for painting.
My Annie Sloan stockist M.I.A. Since then, I’ve tried Rustoleum Chalked charcoal paint (I want true black, but this brand doesn’t have black).
