Annie Sloan Black Chalk Paint
Today I will show you how to paint furniture with black chalk. This is Annie Sloan’s first use of Athenian Black. (Yes, Annie Sloan is a firm believer in the best chalk paint. And not because they are a brand called “Chalk Paint”. Now that I use Athenian Black on my nightstand, on my think it’s a better black paint. For furniture.) How To Annie Sloan Chalk Paint
It’s an Ethan Allen bedside table and you immediately know it’s well made before you even see the maker’s mark. I paid $22 at the grocery store.
I picked up a can of Athenian Black from my local Annie Sloan Chalk Paint dealer and plan to use this animal print poster board as part of the project.

First, make sure the part is clean and lightly sanded. You don’t always need to sand before applying Chalk Paint, but I used 220 grit to get a little clear coat. (Learn how to prepare furniture for painting here and chalk furniture here.)

Then I drilled a new hole for the new drawer with my trusty drill/driver and filled the old hole with wood. If you look at the gold shot below, you will notice that the screws are not centered on the front of the bow. So I drilled a new hole… I had to center it a little because of the screws. (However, if you look at it directly, the pull appears centered on the drawer.)
Then it’s time to paint. Athenian Black Chalk Paint is a beautiful deep black that Annie Sloan has been releasing for the past few years. In the past, Graphite was the closest color option to black, and gray was actually deeper.
Athenian Black is true black and does not require a primer for bleeding. If you are painting laminate (faux wood) furniture or a smooth surface, you need to prime (with a clear or colored primer).
Chalk Paint is very thick, so brush it on and let it dry in that area as you move on to the next area. If you brush the same area before it’s completely dry, you may end up with more texture than you expect. However, It dries very quickly so you should start the second coat as soon as you finish the first coat.
How To Paint Furniture With Black Chalk Paint
Once everything is dry, lightly sand the piece to smooth it out and even sand the edges and curves to break it up. I used 320 grit sand for this part.
You can see in these photos that once the black chalk paint is applied, the edges turn gray. I’ll tell you how to get past the gray edges after you’ve dusted and sanded the drawers.
If you continue down the sand, you will see some of the original wood finish. It depends on what you want to do – I prefer the “less is more” approach.
I wanted this piece to be funky and modern, so I bought this animal print poster board to line the drawer. First I measured the drawer and then measured/marked the same area on the board.

Cut carefully – it is better to cut it too small and leave the excess.
Drawers are lined with different types of materials – poster board, scrapbook paper, contact sheet, fabric, large map, wrapping paper, etc. can be lined. A surprise inside.
Paper can also be glued to various products; But mostly I use matte Mod Podge and a foam brush. Apply a thin layer to the front of the paper and then continue – gently rub back and forth for 1-2 minutes. Do not use too much glue or it will be messy and thin and you may tear the paper.
The best topcoat to use after painting chalk black furniture is Black Wax. You can use it with a brush, but I prefer a non-stick cloth.
Annie Sloan Waxes And Decorative Paintwork Finishes
Usually when using black wax over other paint colors it is best to use the clear wax first and then use the black on top. The clear wax acts as a barrier and you can control how much black wax is actually used. Because if you use too much, rub the clear wax on top and remove some black spots.
But I recommend using black chalk paint directly. It gives a beautiful rich finish and covers the gray edges that weren’t beaten earlier. You can compare the images above and below to see the difference.
A word of warning: if you apply the black wax with a non-vinyl cloth. You may get wax on your fingers. It comes off easily after washing, but don’t worry about the fabric. Just throw it away.
Depending on how much of your material you will be using, you may need 1-3 coats of wax for protection. Also, wax takes about 30 days to fully heal, so use it sparingly for the first month or so.

Chalk Paint can be modern or trendy depending on how you use it. I love how the piece looks cool or sleek and modern. And I love painting with Athenian Black – so I think it’s the best black paint for furniture. In fact, I’m already looking for something else to use.

Chloe Kempster Annie Sloan’s Artist in Residence Chloe Kempster used negative space and Chalk Paintâ„¢ in Athenian Black to create this amazing combination of wood paint.
Here Chloe Kempster from Maisie’s House shows how to use Chalk Paintâ„¢ and ‘negative space’. A “negative area” is a piece of unpainted wood over another painted piece of furniture. This is the perfect solution if you have a particularly beautiful or unusual piece of wooden furniture that is damaged elsewhere but not damaged.

The rustic pattern Chloe created suggests that the Chalk Paintâ„¢ has worn down over the years. Chloe painted the top with Athenian Black, using a clean, damp brush to create a graduated effect around the base and edge of the paint. This leaves a tassel of unpainted wood in the middle of the piece. Chalk Paintâ„¢ can be sponged as needed to create a true, soft fade when wet.
Finally, Chloe Uses Clear Chalk Paintâ„¢ wax on unpainted wood and Athenian Black areas to protect and finish.
