I don’t like my old stove surround. Nothing wrong with that, except it’s not my style. Our home is traditionally decorated with bright red brick that matches the exterior. (I’m not a big fan of either, but that’s a story).

Then buying a new TV is inevitable. The new one is a little bigger than the old one, so I hate having a big TV and a small (comparatively) stove around. So a few weeks ago on Monday, my husband came home to this scene.
I was staring at the hateful stove for too long, so I picked up a hammer and a screwdriver. The exterior cut pieces that are still visible in the picture above, I removed the exterior and moldings. All that was left was a large plate attached to the wall and a plate from the stove.

Next was a trip to Home Depot to buy a table saw and a piece of plywood. I tore the paper to create two columns and boxes to create a horizontal space in the middle. Using a 2×4 cut for the blocks inserted into the existing wood paneling, a base was made for the outer panels.
In other words, you don’t have to worry about attaching anything to the wall because you keep the existing large counters and cabinets. I simply attached the plywood to the existing board.
All that’s left is the “easy” simple part – trimming the edge to make it look good. I was really worried about the crows, I don’t think I can do it. I tried to cut the crown several times in the past, but I couldn’t cut the head. Until you find this handy visual trick.
Winning the crown was probably the proudest moment of my life. I feel like I can do anything now.

I left things here and was able to paint around (wood filler, sand and glue, of course). It will look good. The large TV destined for the finished basement (which I still hate) is now more proportional. But I know that after trying so hard, I’m still dissatisfied. The brick is very good; It’s a classic, and some people might even prefer something else. But I was looking for a fresher, updated look that would go better with my recently remodeled kitchen. I knew that brick had to be covered with marble.
Research; I’ll save you hours at Home Depot asking questions and finding the right way to tile a brick fireplace. The brick is uneven and you can’t just lay tiles. It is necessary to add a layer of cement board to make the surface even. I can’t pull the cement board over the brick, so I use a thin layer and then lay the tiles after it hardens. Cement board is easy to cut – it breaks with a knife.
It’s like accidentally spreading the beauty on a cement slab. Next thing you know, the panel is installed and the project is complete. In fact, I had a headache for days between these two pictures. The large 12×12 marble slabs on the floor are relatively easy to install and cut. However, The herringbone mosaic (I used 12×12 Grecian White) was an absolute nightmare. Marble is a very brittle material. When trying to cut a small piece into a smaller piece, It broke. I solved it for two days without the tiles sticking and loosening. peeled, Repeat before pulling the stick. Fortunately, Most of the imperfections are covered with mud. (My solution is Polyblen modified in Snow White.)
There are so many flaws that only I (or a very trained eye) can see and it looks amazing to many. I made mistakes, but I learned from them. Next time I will be almost perfect. Finally, This was my first time installing this tile (except when the contractors watched me install my backsplash and asked me to show them how). It’s a tough field, even for the pros.

And it’s over here. I love how fresh the update sounds. I still don’t like the big TV and leather couches for this space. They should have been in the basement when we first bought it for our first house. Someday, when I finish this basement, they’re going to go down there and help me with more feminine linens and sofas. And a small TV.
I also think I want to add a built-in around the stove. I’m still researching this. I’m still trying to decide if I should take this up as my next DIY. I will keep you posted. After removing my stove and removing the very ugly peach marble slab. The original 1946 brick fireplace was removed. It took a bit of work to remove the rough surface and prepare it for the tile, but now the bowl is in good shape. Stone and glass tile fireplace.

Then I built it up with cement board to be level with the floor and raised the middle a bit (I’ll see why in a bit).
Removed the front of the gasifier which will need a new coat of high heat black spray paint to cover all the brass. You should do this before running the demo, But I couldn’t figure out how to get rid of it. After the last screw was removed, it fell to the ground. I’m glad I haven’t installed a marble slab stove yet.

Before you can cover the brick with a beautiful new tile, you need to smooth the surface. This is especially important for the mosaic stones and glass panels I will be using. Small pieces can sink into cracks and depressions, making the new tile uneven.
Scrub the entire surface of the brick oven well with a wire brush and vacuum to absorb all the dust. This feathery attachment loosened what was trapped in cracks and crevices.
Using the side of a small spatula, spread the plate over the brick. I find it easier to use a narrow spatula. Apply the plate to all brick corners and add more as needed to level the surface.
Once covered with a large brick, use a larger trowel to remove excess plaster. A slot is left in the lantern to allow for a straight line when the new fireplace is installed later.
