Today I’m sharing my experience and success with painting a fireplace! I am very happy with the results and think I will flush the basement flue this year. Below is an unfinished chimney. This is a great fireplace, but due to its size and fire-engine red color, it takes up the entire space!

How To Whitewash A Brick Fireplace
You need to flush your chimney first. This will remove a lot of the dirt and debris that inevitably gets trapped in the mortar and bricks. This is perhaps the most difficult part of the job. There will be pebbles for mortar and bricks everywhere. So clean everything around you and make sure you have a cloth in place. Vacuum it when you’re done or these little pieces will be stuck to your feet for weeks!
Mix paint with equal parts water. Depending on how you want the paint to be coated, you may need to adjust the proportions a little. I use 1:1, double layer.
Cover everything you care about with a rag or painter’s tape. The technique of covering the bricks created a lot of mess – lots of paint splatters! It’s also a good idea to replace items you no longer plan to wear.
Well, you finally get to bleach those breasts! If you’re worried about the stability of this design decision, that’s okay! Me too, but who are we kidding! ? It will look great! Just put on these gloves and jump in!

Start working in small chunks. Stucco dries very quickly, so a 2′ x 2′ area should be a good starting point.
Dip the brush into the paint/water mixture and apply it to the chimney. Really get that hair in – you want to cover every little nook and cranny. Don’t be afraid to spread it thickly.
Take a white cloth and wipe off the lime. Your hands will be numb by the time you finish working on the entire chimney. So, relax. All you have to do is wipe off the excess paint. Be sure to clean up any dripping water that may be trying to get into the grout lines and flow!
Continue doing this around the chimney. Let dry. I like to let it sit for a few days before deciding if I need a second coat. Just dip it in and see if you like the color. I adjusted the paint to water ratio and painted the second coat of the fireplace and it went much faster than the first coat!

The acrylic component of the paint traps moisture behind the bricks, causing them to degrade over time. If you want your brick home to have a solid painted look, choose a breathable paint made specifically for brick, such as Rombio’s Mineral Masonry Paint.

To get that aged, distressed look, you’ll need to leave a few bricks unpainted, which is easy to do with real limewash. You can remove the product if desired to reveal the original brick color.
