There are many brands of paints and textures to choose from. It can be a bit overwhelming.
There are many variables to consider when trying to figure out what paint to use for pourable acrylic paint; price, how well the media mix and pour, availability in your area, texture when dry, how well they mix with other colors, etc. We like the Liquitex base for our cast acrylic paints and have Arteza and Blick acrylic paints nearby.

Arteza is a relatively new player on the acrylic paint market. Over the past few years, they’ve really established themselves as an online arts and crafts store run by people for people. Arteza aggressively sells acrylic paints and mica powder to the acrylic paint industry.
Blick Art Materials is a large company specializing almost exclusively in art products. Blick Studio Acrylics is Blick Art Materials’ own paint brand. This paint is a high performance paint at an affordable price.
NOTE: Blick also has educational quality acrylic paints. We chose not to list them in this post as we had no experience with them, but we already have some pretty good educational acrylics from Sax and Sargent.

This is a novelty in the Artist’s loft brand. The ready-to-mix casting paint can be poured directly from the bottle without additional casting or mixing agents.
Gold is another paint manufacturer. They started in the 1980s after the death of their founder, Sam Golden, and became an employee-owned company. Gold is a trusted trademark and a popular color for many artists outside the gaming community.

This is a brand that has recently been introduced to us. These colors are also used for educational purposes and therefore are sold in quite large quantities.
The Amsterdam paint brand is owned by Royal Talens, a Dutch paint manufacturer founded in 1899. The Amsterdam brand was launched in 1976 and has been a fixture in the student acrylic paint scene ever since. Royal Talens has a presence in New Jersey and Massachusetts in the United States.
New York-based Utrecht, named after its high school in Brooklyn, has been active in the art world since the 1950s. It was acquired by Blick in 2013 and continues to be a premium brand of art supplies.

Craft paints include brands like FolkArt, Craftsmart, DecoArt Americana, Apple Barrel, Martha Stewart, and more. We do not recommend using dollar paint for anything other than practice.
We are not going to review every brand of craft paints, but we do want to give you some general information about these acrylic paints as they are used by many aspiring acrylic casting artists.
We had no major problems with this paint to start pouring acrylic paint. We use them and still use them in certain situations (think metallic and shiny colors).
However, with the exception of some metallic and iridescent colors, we still recommend using one of the above brands for work you plan to keep or sell.

In the end, we chose Liquitex because it is relatively inexpensive, has very good light fastness ratings, is easy to buy online and in local stores, and has a long history of quality.
We like the Arteza pigment load, but the lack of availability and cost are too high to claim it as a first.
Blick has great products, but it’s harder to buy if you don’t have a Blick Art Supply store in your area.
Choosing a paint to use in an acrylic cast project is a subjective practice. How easy it is to get paint, the price in your area, shipping requirements, and other factors all contribute to the final answer to the question “best brand of acrylic casting paint?” Nearly impossible.
