Best Kitchen Backsplash Ideas 2022

Welcome to the 927th day of quarantine! I hope you are all there. We are doing great. But there’s no doubt that one of the only reasons I’m healthy is that I can still tackle projects around our house. Otherwise I would be seriously pissed off!

For those with butcher blocks, this project is quick, easy, and perfect if you’re just starting to get crazy. This is one of the many projects we did on Thea’s $997 Kitchen Remodel and let me tell you, it made a big impact for under $30. I was shocked at how easy it was to refinish the butcher case to make it look like new.

This is what Tea’s countertops looked like before we started (here’s a front view of her entire kitchen). She really hated them and I think she would have ripped them out and replaced them if it was within the budget (same tile backsplash but we changed it with paint)!

Fortunately, I was convinced that we could make them beautiful, and I was right! Look how they look now. Read on to learn exactly how to restore butcher block slabs in about 30 minutes for $30.

1) Clean up your cabinets and tape the backing to protect it if you’re worried about accidentally hitting it with the sander. We had just finished painting his back so we were very careful, but it wasn’t hard to avoid the new paint!

2) Now you are ready to sand! I would recommend using 60 grit sandpaper to best remove any marks, burns or burrs from the blade. Just be careful not to sand to create a dip in the countertop. Then sand the entire work surface with 100-grit sandpaper, and finally the entire work surface with 150-grit sandpaper to make it nice and smooth. It took us less than 15 minutes on the sand. We want a helper to hold the vacuum and vacuum up as much sawdust as possible while the other person sands!

3) Use an old t-shirt or tack cloth to remove dust from the counter surface. In the photo below you can see what a difference sanding makes. The sandy surface is on the left.

4) Now you are ready to enhance the color of your counters and protect them with hemp oil. I simply poured hemp oil into a plastic bowl and applied it to the counters with a foam brush, in the same direction as the grain of the wood. After letting it sit for about an hour, I wiped off the excess with an old cloth. Then I repeated the exact same procedure a second time. It’s a quick brush and wipe. It took less than 15 minutes (excluding drying time of course).

If you’re wondering why we used hemp oil, that’s why… first we applied tung oil, which is commonly used on butcher blocks. And it didn’t really do anything to improve the look of Thea’s counters, which was disappointing because my goal was for Thea to fall in love with her counters.

We simply used hemp oil to seal and protect her newly painted kitchen cabinets (check out the super quick method we used here – no sealer or primer, so it only took 2 days). And since it’s completely non-toxic and food safe, I thought we should give it a try at its stalls. a tree It was perfect. Reaches in to protect. This oil does not leave a surface layer that will peel or scratch. It’s actually easy to repair butcher blocks.

So for under $30 (we used less than ⅕ of a bottle of hemp oil and very little sandpaper) and less than 30 minutes of practice, Thea has beautiful “new” panels that she loves!

That’s it for now. If you recreate your butcher block counters using this tutorial, I’d love it if you shared the photos and tag me on Instagram @tasha.kaleidoscope.

The butcher block should also be the visual focal point of your kitchen. One way to achieve this is with a fresh coat of paint.

Consider the undertone of the wood when choosing a paint color and shade. Go to your local paint store or hardware store and ask for a swatch book for a wide selection of colors. Hold a swatch of each color next to the tree to determine which color you like best. Pay attention to the type of wood of the work surface.

Neutrals almost always look great with natural wood, but don’t be afraid to get creative! Make sure you choose a color that not only complements your work surface, but the rest of your home design as well.

You can add extra texture to your kitchen by mixing different shapes and sizes. For example, instead of choosing a flat surface, try wood paneling or a plank style (also known as paneling). The possibilities are limited only by your imagination and personal preferences.

Butcher block countertops are a visually appealing feature with many beautiful textures, colors and other details. Accentuate these details in your kitchen with updated lighting fixtures.

From pendant lights to lanterns, there’s a lighting accessory to match any unique kitchen design. Hanging lamps from the ceiling with extra long wires or chains is a trendy option. For a classic, traditional look, a chandelier is never a bad option.

In some cases, two to four brackets are placed side by side above the counter. Regardless of your preference, make sure your countertop is fully lit so everyone can see its beauty.
