If there’s one color that has haunted many dreams since the late 90s and early 2000s, it’s definitely beige. Many try to move away from their warm, Tuscan-inspired vibe for something a little more modern, but those cream-colored tiles and carpet always get in the way! Personally, I like beige, but as much as my inappropriate humor, that’s about it

The bottom line is that you have to listen to your home and its specific needs, even if those needs conflict with what you really want to do. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t happy mediums, and I’m here to help you find them.

In order to know what your home’s needs are, you must first determine what you have. Beige, whether it’s tile, paint color, furniture, or carpeting, has SOME combinations of orange, pink, or yellow hues (green creeps occasionally). The most common beige undertone combination is orange-pink, although the scale can tilt toward any of the lower hues. Once you understand YOUR specific cream mix, it will be easier to move forward with confidence.

If you want to learn more about the ins and outs, I have a blog post coming up soon!

While you may not like to hear that, there’s a VERY GOOD CHANCE that your beige tiles or carpet are an orange-red or light pink tint. And you might be worried that you need pink walls to make it all work, but don’t worry about your pretty daffodils – I’ve got your back.

The key to working with them, especially when it comes to pink undertones, is to stop fighting them. When you fight color or try to avoid it (for example, by painting a wall blue or green), you can actually make things worse if you try to tone down the undertones of pink, of which there are two types. …

If your tile or carpet is a light pink and you don’t want BEIGE walls, look for a warm neutral paint color with a pink undertone (usually taupe). That doesn’t mean you have a PINK WALL, but you do

Pale Oak is a very popular taupe because it goes well with beige surfaces. That doesn’t mean it will ALWAYS work, but it’s a great place to start.

Some rugs and tiles have a pink or orange-pink undertone, but ALSO have a warm mauve-pink (taupe) undertone, which makes them a bit more versatile with taupe paint colors. Taupe paint color is warmer than gray, but NOT as warm as beige.

In a situation like this where you have a mix of colors on your surface, it’s MUCH easier to stretch beige out of the box. Of the three colors in the image above (wall base color and two samples)

If you guessed the right side, you’re right! Benjamin Moore Pale Oak is a soft warm gray gray with a passive purple undertone that really hits a happy spot with the tile.

Can you extend your tiles to something more gray like Benjamin Moore Collingwood or Balboa Mist? There’s no harm in trying, but my money is on Pale Oak.

In the following example, the brick fireplace, carpet, and walls are pink, meaning they coordinate well. My client also chose warm gray furniture with a purple undertone, which works better than a greenish gray.

The best thing about a room like this is that the bricks offer the versatility to be teamed with beige furniture or warm gray/taupe options!

We’ll cover more “multitone” surfaces in a moment, but first we’ll paint them in color. I’d like to show you pictures of beige roomswith NON-BEIGE walls, but since I only use pictures from my E-design clients, I don’t always have what I need. But that doesn’t mean I don’t have some more GREAT COLORS for you to try…

At 61 LRV, Popular Gray is deeper than Pale Oak and has a clearer undertone (purple-pink).

I’ve included Cedar Key here because it makes a great Moderator between beige and gray. Why? Since it’s really a mix of the two, it’s a great choice for modernizing many beige surfaces! Want depth? Smokey Taupe – See love MAD.

Stunning Bathroom Paint Colors

Versatile Gray A nice light medium color with 48 LRV, meaning it has more meat on the bones and the GLORIOUS gray we were looking for.

The tile in the image above looks like a mix of beigewith pinkish-orange undertones and taupe, so Multipurpose Gray is a very attractive and versatile option!

Egret White is a subtle, sophisticated taupe with an LRV of 70, which places it at the HIGH end of the light range. While similar in depth to Pale Oak, it’s a bit more gray in color, so make sure your beige tiles can SUPPORT that extra dose of gray!

Remember, you do NOT need to completely redo the look of your beige tiles (based on your choice of original paint color). And while you may be able to use the richer gold color that was used frequently 20 years ago, you may still need to paint your walls a warm color for things to work – you’re just looking at a more MODERN warm paint color. .

In the following example, see the transition from warm beige (left) to dark beige (middle) to warm gray (right). The colder you are, the more tile bones touch, because the patterns on the right don’t connect. Even though the HUMOR tile is the middle color, the left swatch is really the best choice.

, you should avoid green or blue paint colors (or gray or gray in these undertones). Of course, there are ALWAYS exceptions, especially if the undertone of the rug is very subtle, but be careful, as cool paint tones can easily STRENGTHEN products with warm hues, which doesn’t always create a “new look.”

Not all beige tiles or rugs can support a visually cool neutral paint color, so sample carefully and listen to your home.

The next photo is a GREAT illustration of how some paint colors can look really pink with products (this was one of our houses when we first moved in – wow. Thankfully, Tim and my dad flooded the house and got new floors).

In the next example, the floor and countertop products are pink. In this case, the very soft earthy green tone is a WONDERFUL complement to almost any hard surface in this room, including the dark wood trim – which helps when you have some sweet ginger slime in your back pocket (squeezed by asking).

Also avoid cream and cream paint colors or black colors with yellow undertones. Yellow and pink don’t really like each other and you could have a HOT undertone on your hands. In the next photo, my client doesn’t like the house they bought with Sherwin Williams Antique White Island and Macadamia walls.

The vintage white island is a little too creamy yellow for the more eye-catching orange (orange-pink) tones of the travertine tiles on the floor, and just carries over with the stone fireplace. The macadamia (walls) had a neat greenish color that matched the floor and fireplace – all CLOSE, but no cigars!

Again, in the next photo, the previous owner used Antique White on the cabinets, which is TOO yellow for most beige tiles (and therefore one of those whites I will never paint or refinish my cabinets).
