Paint Color Review: Sherwin Williams Alabaster 7008
A paint’s light reflectance value, or “LRV,” measures the amount of visible light that reflects off a painted surface. So, for example, an LRV of 0 would be the blackest black, and an LRV of 100 would be the whitest white.
When you think of the color white, you don’t just think of how light or dark it is, but the color temperature, whether it’s warm, cool, or neutral. Warm whites are like white mixed with red, orange or yellow. Cool whites look like white mixed with green, blue or purple. And neutral whites is the middle of the temperature “Thermometer”, neither hot nor cold. This is the simplest way I can explain it, but look at the color wheel below and you’ll get a better idea of warm and cool tones. While you can still have “warm” blues and “cool” yellows, for the sake of whites, I tend to lean more towards yellow/warm or blue/cool.
On the Behr website, you can browse their whites and even see if they are warmer or cooler, and you can see which colors the Marquee One cover covers. Sample size for Behr Paint is 8 oz. jar and usually costs $3 to $4. This is the color I use the most.
Ultra Pure White – Called the purest white color, it has an LRV of 94. It’s clear, white, and always leans a little on the cool side. This is what I use on all my hand boards. You don’t even need to go to the table to mix it, because this is the base they use to mix other colors of paint. If you have a finish (ruth, egg, satin, etc.) that you want, you will need to mix it.
