Behr White With Gray Undertone – You’re in the mood to work on a DIY project and start updating your wall color. You’ve seen all the inspiration and you can picture it in your mind – clean white walls that make your room light, airy and open. White is one of the most popular wall colors, it looks like a plain and simple color. However, once you start exploring the options, you realize that not all whites are created equal.
Most whites have a slight tint or undertone. A few white inks are colorless. This means that they can have a small hint of blue, pink, yellow, green, brown, purple, gray and so on. It may not be easy to spot your undertone by looking at paint chips, comparing them side by side, or looking at them on a computer screen. The best way to see the tone of your white is to cut off a piece of white copy paper, use natural light conditions and see which color stands out. It’s almost like magic how quickly they appear.

Lighting can play a role. Be sure to look for white patterns under all light sources in your home. Test your color on the largest possible surface. The best visual test is to buy an 8 oz. samples, painting areas on the wall and revising during the day.

Compare your white swatches with other elements or materials in the room. Look at your white pieces next to floors, cabinets, countertops, tiles, and furniture pieces to make sure they coordinate. Thousands of DIYers love Behr paints for their quality and affordability, just like me. Here are my favorites in three color families – neutral, warm and cool white. As you can see, I chose Silky White for the walls of my house and Ultra Pure White for the finishes and doors. Here are the best white ceiling colors if you want a complete update. I also suggest some other whites that work if you need a cooler or warmer color. You can pick up 8 ounce samples of the other colors at the Home Depot store – unfortunately, they don’t seem to ship samples, although you can order a pint.
Home Depot sells some of these paints in easy-to-peel-and-stick patterns. I ordered a bunch and tried them out in different rooms and different lighting situations.

For my first round of research, I took some popular Benjamin Moore samples from White Dove, Simply White and Classic Grey. Based on my research on Pinterest, I thought this might be my best choice for a white or off-white ink. At some points I hit walls
Behr’s Most Popular White Paint Colors
Then I realized that I should probably mix these colors into Behr paint, which is my favorite to buy. I needed actual samples of Behr white because the base color varies from brand to brand and colors can look a little different.

For color samples, touch-ups and small painting jobs. Definitely buy the Jen Mfg brand on Amazon – they are a bit more expensive, but they are very well made and hold up better than the off-the-shelf products. This box of 1-inch brushes (48) costs about $17, or about 35 cents per disposable brush. Personally, the time saved washing brushes when I’m just painting swatches is worth it.
Did you know that major hardware stores can match designer colors just by looking up the color codes on their computers? They also have a color scanning tool that can match colors based on an ink chip or a small flat slice of the desired color. I usually start by checking out my local Home Depot and asking the paint department if I can mix a sample of “__ color” from the “__ paint line” into their Premium Plus Ultra paint. For the most popular colors in the regular paint lines, they have Behr paint-adjusted formulas that are very close. It’s impossible to get an exact match, due to different ink formulations, but if it’s close enough to fool the eye, that’s fine with me.
Are There True Gray Paint Colors Without Undertones?
I took these Behr versions of White Dove and Simply White and painted them along with my first samples. They look very similar, so I was pretty sure I had chosen a white wall color. Want to guess what happened?
Nobody. Surprise! In fact, I went back for a third round of samples and tried some white Behr ink colors. I went back to the table (or blue wall…) because I discovered Silky White by Behr. I wanted better contrast with my topcoat color, Behr’s Ultra Pure White, which the internet had convinced me was the best topcoat color. The polar bear was another trim candidate, so I picked that up as well. Here they are contrasted with BM White Dove:
After checking my swatches at different times of the day, I feel pretty confident that I’ve picked a winner. Silky White has massive undertones and looks warm next to the bright white trim. Although I was thinking about painting the whole house white on white, I wanted to have a subtle contrast. I’m not sure what you can say…white on white on white. Images are hard.
Now that I’ve lived with these walls for 6 months, I still love this color. I started by painting the trim in Ultra Pure White. Looks like the Polar Bear will work too, so I’m saving this on file for the future.
