Beige And Green Exterior House Colors – A green-gray exterior paint color is often the best choice for homes that are trimmed with natural stone or brick. Here’s a case study that shows why!

In our blog on choosing an exterior paint color, we discuss how any unpainted brick or stone areas of your home should be considered when choosing a color for the rest of your exterior. Since your stucco or wood trim will be seen alongside any stone or brick, its paint color must coordinate or your home will look like a mess. .

Since there are so many shades to choose from when choosing any neutral paint color, it always helps to see a real example. Check out one of our newest projects in San Antonio, Texas. The house has natural stone and brick trim, so it’s a perfect case study as to why a green-gray exterior paint color works especially well here. We painted the grout with HGSW3447 “Sackcloth,” a color from Sherwin-Williams’ HGTV Home Collection. This is a paint chip nearly identical to the Sherwin Williams 9172 ‘Shiitake’.

The first step in choosing an exterior paint color is to determine the tone of the stone or brick.

This is how the house looks from the street after we painted it. Remember that sunlight will make the exterior paint look cooler, which is why the house will appear greener than the paint.

This lovely home has stone around the front door and brick around the windows. Before you choose “sack” as your grout paint color, you need to know the tone of your stone and brick. (We detail how to determine timbre here.)

Nationally recognized color consultant Maria Killam has written extensively about shades, but here’s our quick and cursory review. In the color world, we all know the terms “warm” and “cool” (orange is warm, blue is generally cool, etc.). But color temperature alone doesn’t tell you which colors will harmonize with the outside palette. What if you’re looking at a bunch of neutral color options, like beige or gray, where all your choices might actually be the same and the temperature isn’t that obvious? This is where secondary notes come in. We only discuss primary colors that neutral colors work best with. It’s hard to spot a hue in an eye-catching neutral palette like “Beige” (is it yellow beige? pink beige? green beige?). But not all tones work well together, so this is an important step. For a harmonious color scheme, look for the hue of an element you won’t be painting (your stone or brick trim) and choose an exterior color that matches that hue.

Choosing a tone isn’t an exact science, and you won’t always find the perfect match. The pink beige above is found in brick, but more intense colors like rose red and chalky white are confusing. All you have to do is choose the best overall shade. Don’t strive for perfection, just get close.

Now, while both pink beige and yellow beige exist in this home, they tend not to work well together. Yellow beige neutrals, such as cream, are usually richer and darker than pink beige. Think how much lighter the sand on the beach is than the pink travertine. Beige can often make pink beige look a bit dirty or messy (which is why you should never paint your walls beige if you have pink limestone floors). But yellow and pink beige are common here in natural materials like limestone and brick. Fortunately, both of these shades complement green beige or green gray, making green grays like “Sack” or “Shiitake” the perfect color for this home.

All greenish neutrals, like green beige and green gray, work well with yellow and pink tones. But if you want your house to have a cooler gray, yellow limestone around your front door is going to be problematic. Here we Photoshopped the house to look like a blue-gray we painted with Benjamin Moore’s HC-169 “Coventry Grey”:

In real life, the house looks greener because the daylight makes the color more bluish outside than inside (where you’d normally judge your paint spots). But even with this quick simulation, you can see that the yellow limestone stands out and doesn’t sit well with the blue-gray. You can get rid of “Cventry Grey” against bricks, but not really against stone. But what if the house doesn’t have stone or brick accents? “Cventry Grey” looks lovely! (But paint a large sample board first, at least a square foot, and evaluate it outside before actually painting! Never rely solely on online photos when choosing a color. We’ll tell you why here.)

Remember: if your home has stone or brick accents, beware of cool tones, gray or blue tones, they may clash. A lime green (or green beige) exterior paint color is often your best bet! Looking for some pretty green home color schemes? You have come to the right place. Just as important as the interior color you choose. The color on the outside of your house should be your favorite color when you come home each day. We all know that the color you choose for a room can affect how you feel in it. But what many people don’t realize is that the same principles apply to the exterior of your home. A neighborhood full of nondescript beige houses. Boring color combinations don’t inspire much excitement when standing by the curb. Although many real estate agents may recommend choosing neutral colors to attract the most potential buyers. No one chooses beige as their favorite color. Playing it safe isn’t always your best bet, and while no one will hate this house, it’s safe to say no one will actually love it.
