Benjamin Moore Advance Cabinet Paint Colors – This week I’m sharing how I tried using Benjamin Moore Advance to paint furniture. It is an alkyd paint that does not require a topcoat like many furniture paints.
I will share my thoughts on it, how I used it and how it turned out in the end.

Green Kitchen Cabinet Update
But man, raise your hand if you think the original hardware on this piece is gone! In fact, I think just changing the hardware on the nightstands would have made a huge difference. Haha
And then I filled the old holes on the bottom drawer so I could put the new fittings in.
And then I cleaned the bedside tables with a crude cutter to remove any dirt, grease or grime from the surface.
I thought I’d be proactive and sand the top down a bit to remove the top scratches.

So I sanded it with 100 grit sandpaper to start and then I sanded it with 150 grit sandpaper. And then I sanded it all down with 220 grit sandpaper.
After the fillers dried, I sanded the drawers smooth and sanded the tops smooth as well.
I mostly used clear shellac to help the paint adhere to the surface without sanding it first.
If you’ve watched any of my videos other than the last one, you’ve probably seen me talk all about sanding and priming the creation before painting.

But now I’m on a mission to really test clear shellac to see if all the paint I’m using will go really well with just clear shellac to adhere to it.
I love how easy it is to spray on and how I don’t have to sand it even after I spray it, unlike some spray primers that are gritty when you spray it on.
So I sprayed both nightstands with 2 coats of clear shellac, letting it dry for an hour after each coat.

Benjamin Moore Advance Satin
Before I sprayed it on the furniture, I tested the spray on some cardboard so I could make sure I had the right paint settings and thickness.
So you can clean it with water, you can add water to it, but once it hardens, it’s like an oil-based paint.
One big downside though is that Tin says it needs to dry for up to 16 hours between coats.
When I sprayed it, it left a little orange peel texture, but I’ve heard from other painters that this is normal, so I wasn’t too worried.

This is what the paint looked like after it had time to dry. You can see that there is some orange peel left, but most of it is the same.
The top of the nightstand has a lot of swirl marks, which is really weird because I don’t usually get swirl marks with this SurfPrep sander.
So I went back to the drawing board and I sanded the top down to the raw wood.
As I got them down, I had a lot of time to think about what I wanted to do next. I can either repaint them or I can leave them in wood.

After a few minutes I wiped the dirty cloth back to wipe off some of the glaze.
A few hours later, after the chalk had dried, I applied a few more coats of water-based poly by hand.
You can also spray polyurethane with a paint sprayer, but since this paint doesn’t require a top coat, I decided to play it safe and just apply the poly to the top of the wood by hand.
I let each coat dry for a few hours between coats, and sanded with a fine pad before the final coat.

I also spent a minute lightly sanding the green to make sure it was smooth before applying another coat of paint.
And before painting again, I taped off the tops so I wouldn’t get paint on them.
I found these drawer pulls in my collection of old hardware and thought they would go well with the nightstand.
I love that you don’t have to cover it. But overall, with drying time, it takes longer than usual with other paints.
How I Repainted Our Kitchen Cabinets
I’ve heard that dark colors in alkyd paint take a long time to harden… and it’s true.
I painted the nightstands for a few weeks and I have to be very careful when placing the brackets.
With other furniture paints and water based poly I have had no issues with light application even after a day or two.
The clear shellac primer seems to have worked well. I tested the inside of the foot without any shellac. And the paint scratches easily there.

I find that once the paint hardens it won’t scratch as easily where the shellac was first applied.
Yes! At least you will use a bonding primer. But a stain-blocking primer and a good bonding primer are best.
BIN shellac based primers are the best option as they have excellent bonding properties and block stains.
No one In fact, you should not topcoat Benjamin Moore Advanced Paint. As alkyd paint dries, it can cause polytopcoat to crack.

Watch for drips as you brush on the paint, and brush on in thin layers to avoid drips and dips in the paint.

Warm whites, cool whites, off whites, pinks, blues, greens – you name a color, white covers it! And choosing white can be a daunting experience, especially if you’re not starting from scratch, with an existing finish to coordinate. So I’ve narrowed things down to my favorite ‘go-to’ wheats for you to check out.
BTW: The best way to choose your favorite white is to compare them to each other. This will really help you narrow down the undertones and decide what works best for you and your home.
The Right Way To Paint Your Kitchen Cabinets And Save $$$ (factory Finish Guaranteed)
Ah, you want white, do you? For me, highly reflective white is the best ‘white-white’. Although there are ODD Sherwin Williams stores that for some reason don’t carry it, I’ve found that most SW.
A simple white like highly reflective white will give you a nice clean look, but remember your home has to be able to
White kitchen. Many of my E-Design clients find traditional whites a little too icy and cold for their space and need to soften things up a bit with a warm white, especially when they have an existing finish to accommodate, which often isn’t the case.
By far the most popular soft white, cloud white looks like ‘real white’ until you put it next to ‘real white’.

If you didn’t know what type of blog this was – now you do. Just kidding, I have a wicked sense of humor.
Cloud White has a subtle yellow/creamy undertone with an earthy neutral base that doesn’t make it as stark as traditional white. But if you already have ‘white’ trim, white appliances or white windows, you’ll notice the difference.
You’ll no doubt be on your way to getting paint samples in the near future – hang in there! I want to check SAMPLIZE. Sampleize offers peel and stick paint samples that are cheaper, easier and more environmentally friendly than traditional paint cans. Here are some of the reasons why I recommend Sampleize to my clients…
While some whites and off-whites will give a ‘fresh and bright’ look, White Dove is white but a bit softer and more subtle without being as creamy as cloud white.
Expert Tips On Painting Your Kitchen Cabinets
Pure white is great. It is a color of white that sits between the warmth of white dove and the purity of highly reflective white.
Now of course there are other approaches like off white, gray, gray and more, but to keep my sanity (and yours too), we’ll save that for another day!
