Step 1: Smooth surface and drying space A smooth painted surface is key to improving kitchen cabinets. Remove all pictures and doors and be sure to remove all hardware. Then find an area that gives you enough space to work and enough space to let everything dry for a long time.

Step 2: Prepare! Ready! Ready! The first rule of thumb for painting cabinets is to make sure the cabinets and doors are clean and dry. To clean them, use a sponge dampened with a mild cleansing oil and dry everything thoroughly. After cleaning, it’s time to clean up the rough stuff! Most cabinets are too smooth or sanded for repainting and painting, so use medium-grit sandpaper (we like 100-150 grit) and lightly sand the surface — even out the existing finish. Sand on. Not enough, but enough to paint. A little harder to bond to the primer. Dust with a slightly damp cloth, then dry.

Step 3: Protect Your Surroundings Be sure to put a drop cloth or other protective covering over the boards and surrounding work area while painting.

Step 4: Preparation for Application A high-quality primer is the foundation of a successful paint job. Fresh Start High-Hiding All-Purpose Primer is a favorite of professional painters. This acrylic primer provides maximum coverage, seals and removes stains, and provides mildew resistance for wood and other surfaces. Do not use lacquer-based primers because they can interfere with how the advance adheres to the cabinet surface. After you’re done, take a break: Primer should dry for at least 24 hours before moving on to Step 5.

Step 5: Re-sand After your primer has completely dried (at least 24 hours in a well-ventilated area), it’s time to re-sand. Using fine, 220-grit sandpaper or a sanding block, pay particular attention to areas that have drips or pools (ie, inside corners and where two flat areas meet). Make sure the surface is as smooth as possible – this will ensure your paint runs smoothly. Dust with a slightly damp cloth, then dry.

Step 6: Time to Paint! Apply the first coat of Advance Paint with Benjamin Moore’s premium nylon/polyester brush. Time-saving tip: Painting cabinet doors (and similar areas) is faster if you use a foam or microfiber brush instead of a brush. As with primer, allow the first coat of paint to dry completely before applying.

Step 8: Repeat Step 6. A second coat of Advance will give you full coverage and allow the finish to set evenly. We love the look of the Blueberry Hill 812 and the color it complements the white cabinets.

Step 9: Let It Dry! The longer the paint dries, the more stable it will be and the less likely it will stick when reinstalled. At a minimum, cabinets should be dried in a well-ventilated area for at least 24 hours – but two or three days is better.
