This color creates a perfect balance between “too light” warm white and “too dark” traditional beige. In fact, it’s great in almost any application you can imagine using it for!
It has been used with great success for cabinets, exterior work, interior walls, and even furniture. It’s a fresh and warm neutral shade that looks like a chameleon in different lighting conditions.

Sometimes I prefer a true gray, sometimes I prefer a deep creamy white, this fits the bill! Let’s dive in!
Don’t let the mids confuse you. Any gray or light color will make your hair blonde. This should be considered, but not something that will affect your final decision!
LRV (Light Reflectance Value) is a scale used by design professionals. Essentially, 0 = the darkest black and 100 is the true white of the paint. Click here to learn all the details about this incredibly useful tool.
The higher this number, the more light the paint color reflects. Thus, the “whiter” the color of the paint, the higher the number.

The LRV value of classic gray is 74, which means that it can be classified as warm white or beige. Whatever you call it, it’s great!
Because this color is so versatile, it can be used with almost any color of glitter and can be used in many different applications.
How does such a monochromatic color scheme work? Well, you paint the walls with eggshell and paint them semi-gloss.
Classic gray is a warm gray color. Although it has a very light shade of purple, it often looks warmer.

It always depends on many factors. First, think about the colors you pair it with: if you use it next to a lighter white, it will definitely look bright. Second, pay attention to light sources. A brighter, warmer light can drastically change the look of your paint!
Pale Oak is another favorite beige paint shade of mine that you should definitely consider if you’re looking for a classic gray. In comparison, Pale Oak has just under 70 LRV points compared to Classic Grey’s 74 points.
Edgecomb Gray is a very popular beige! Although I haven’t used it personally, it’s been on my list for years. Edgecomb is slightly darker and slightly yellower with an LRV of 63 compared to Classic Gray’s 74.
Pleasant gray has a much lower LRV of 60. Although both colors are very beautiful, the comparison ends there. Check out my full guide to my favorite greige colors for more details!

Compare this color to Sherwin Williams Zurich White when swatching. While Zurich is more of a creamy yellow background, classic gray will have more bluish-gray tones. However, their LRV values are very similar, so this is an important comparison! Home → Best Paint Colors → BENJAMIN & SHERWIN Paint Reviews → Benjamin Moore Classic Gray 1548 Paint Review
Seriously, I can’t believe I didn’t rate this color! This is not only one of my favorite warm grays, but also one of my readers’ favorites! that is all; Two slaps of wet pasta.
They like to sparkle with cool shades of blue, purple or green – classic gray is no exception. However, the key to choosing the color you want is to know what you’re dealing with before you put it on the walls, which is what I have (I don’t just look good, you know…).
Classic Gray is an off-white, warm gray with soft, muted, slightly feminine tones. If you don’t like blues or greens, this might be for you!

You should read this, but here’s the gist: LRV refers to how light or dark a color is on a scale of 0 to 100, and every color has an LRV number. The closer the number is to 100, the lighter the color. The closer it is to 0, the darker the color. Done!
Now that that’s out of the way, let’s go back to classic gray. Classic gray has an LRV of almost 75, which in my crazy color world means off white. And while it may be close to my magical LRV number, it creates a soft contrast with the white trim and still brightens up the room.
However, classic gray can feel dirty and flat if you have a dark room. If you have a LIGHT room, you can expect Classic Gray to wash out a bit, but in an average light room, it’s simply stunning!
I’m going to say this, but I’m going to say it lightly because I know some people are a little sensitive to this shade… classic gray has a passive purple undertone.

. All shades of gray and beige are blue, green, purple or a mixture of both. The point is to make a decision
And how sensitive you and your environment are to this. I don’t usually like shades of purple, but I find classic gray very livable when paired with products in the room (and we have it in our guest room).
Look at the next picture. There’s a reason why I chose brown gray tiles for the bathroom wall – they’re the same shade as the classic gray, just at a darker level.

Classic gray can withstand the northern lights quite well. You’ll see that it looks like a simple, soft and warm gray color because the northern light slightly accentuates the “gray” of the color rather than its subtle warmth.
In fact, as for the photos above and below, it was taken by an E-Design client because, while he loved the classic gray in the evening light, he found it too cold during the day and was looking for a warmer alternative. Here is a classic gray evening with only interior lighting …
Benjamin Moore Pale Oak
It’s amazing how Classic Gray went from a soft and slightly warm gray to a warm gray just by lighting (hello metamarism)! Either that or I’m just a lighthearted and colorful nerd (true and right). Needless to say, I gave her some hotter options to love in the room day and night!
Um, probably not. I mean, you can try, but don’t be surprised if those purple tones show up a little more. At this depth (unless you live in a shady area) you can expect it to actually wash out in the sun.
When it comes to the perfect match, you won’t find it, as there will always be differences in hue, depth and temperature. For a similar approach, you can check out…
