Paint is not a static object. It’s a living, breathing, ever-changing part of your home. And it is affected by the lighting and surrounding decoration.
In a dark room, classic gray may seem too dark if you don’t have good artificial lighting. At the other end of the spectrum, it’s light enough to pass through bright natural light.
Classic Gray’s happy place is at medium light levels, where you can appreciate its richness and warm glow.

Let’s start by comparing Classic Gray to another popular paint color: Sherwin Williams Unity Gray. With an LRV of 60, this shade is a medium gray compared to the light tone of white classic gray.
Although both colors are very neutral with slight undertones, SW Agreeable Gray is a warmer true grey.
Pale Oak is another popular shade from Benjamin Moore. With an LRV of 69, it reads as a medium gray compared to classic gray. Both colors are warm, but Pale Oak shows more of a pink hue next to the mauve tones of Classic Grey.
The last color comparison we will do with Classic Gray is Edgecomb Gray. With an LRV of 63.88, it is darker and richer than classic grey, with deeper beige undertones and some pink. Classic Gray looks great next to Edgecomb Grey.

Looking at the saturation level can really help you understand the softer tones in a lighter shade where it can be harder to tell if it’s warmer or cooler. .
Warmer with its brown undertones, but Benjamin Moore Balboa Mist and La Paloma Gray read cooler in comparison. Dash of Pepper is aptly named as it mixes brown and black tones to create a dark, rich gray paint color.
Cumulus Cloud looks similar to classic gray but reads darker with an LRV of 53.19. If you’re looking to go darker than Classic Grey, Cumulus Cloud might be an example of a paint you might want to pick up a pot of to put on your wall.
Be sure to pick a random paint color to sample, paint it in several places around the room, and watch it throughout the day as the light changes.
