Benjamin Moore Collections Fan Deck – For many homeowners, choosing the perfect paint color can be a difficult task – making mistakes, arguing, collecting receipts for samples or redoing, and sometimes deciding to “give up and paint it white.”

This is why I include paint color selection as part of my architectural services. Having done this many times before, I make it easy and fun for my clients.

I use the Benjamin Moore Professional Sampler, which contains large individual color sheets. If you don’t have a professional to put it together, you can buy Benjamin Moore Fan Decks and buy them later.

Many men are color blind. One in ten men develop color blindness, but it is rare in women. There are many different types and forms of color blindness. The most common type is the inability to distinguish between red and green. It is very difficult to see the color of the paint in different colors, because usually the difference between the two colors is the amount of red or green.

Not all white people are the same. If you have a “white” fan at arm’s length, you’ll think it’s blue, pink, gray or yellow. However, all of them are considered “white”. I have heard the following statements, and I have found that whether they realize it or not, my clients need help.

Complex color changes in different light. Many popular paint brands have complex color bases. It makes the color very rich, whether light or dark. It also affects the color appearance of different types of light. When choosing a color, consider the type and intensity of visible light. Don’t choose a paint color for a showroom floor with fluorescent lighting.

The most complex colors are green, khaki and grey. In my experience, the colors that look the most different depending on the quality and type of light are green, khaki (or camel) and grey. When choosing one of these colors, I take as many samples as I can from a large fan and attach them to the closest facsimile of the desired area or environment. As the light changed, I looked at it several times throughout the day and removed the chips that had started to pick up different colored images. Green tends to brown. Khaki tends to turn purple or green. Gray tends to shift to purple or blue.

Be careful with bright colors. If you are a fan of “happy colors”, remember that colors can be bright without being bright. I once had a client who wanted a bright lime green bedroom. The color he chose was very luminous, which means “shiny”. For small chips, it’s very interesting. But when the whole room was painted, the color bounced off every wall, making the room so intense that the painters stayed there for a short while, their eyes adjusting to their normal state, before leaving. (He immediately painted the room a soft yellow.)

The color looks stronger on the ceiling. Colored paint chips will ensure a strong color image when painted on the ceiling.

The blue on this ceiling is actually white, which makes it look blue next to the white trim.

The exterior color of the house always looks brighter than expected. Choosing a color for the outside of the house is one of the most difficult tasks. Almost everyone who chooses their own exterior paint will tell you they wish it was darker.

The sun is a very powerful light source, even in the Pacific Northwest, and can dramatically affect how colors appear. In fact, exterior paint looks lighter than any paint you’ve ever painted on your home. You should consider the darkest color when choosing an exterior color. If there is a house in your neighborhood that you like, knock on the door and ask what color it is used in or ask permission. Bring your paint fan and compare the sample to the house.

Consider what goes into the room. Is the furniture red or green? Is there something too contrasting in color in the room? Do you have something you would like to use as a focal point, such as artwork or antiques? Is there something on the ceiling that you don’t want to draw attention to? (A bathroom ceiling color may seem like a fun idea, but remember that exhaust fans, ceiling lights, etc. will be more noticeable than a soft white.)

Avoid trendy colors. Retailers have the ability to reverse color trends, and today’s beautiful green will soon become obsolete. The exception to this rule is to choose a color that is currently “on trend” but that you like. If you’ve loved him all your life, you’ll always love him. If it’s a new color you like, enjoy your towels, bedding and rugs. When the color gets sick, it is easier to reverse it than to repaint the room.

Ask for accent wall ideas. My theory is that if you want a color but it’s only on one wall, you’re not sure you like it, or will like it for a long time. Here is another opportunity to fulfill this role: tablecloths, rugs, towels, etc. A true accent wall uses a contrasting or more saturated color to emphasize the architectural features of the space rather than to emphasize the mood.

Asking for help. I bring every color created by Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams into my client’s home and shrink the paint counter. Instead of seeing small bands of five or six colors, we see large areas of individual colors. My paint set is organized by color magnitude within each color, so it’s easy to predict which colors will go towards red, green, blue and purple based on where that color is in each color stack . I will keep this sample with my customer and order a new pack.

If you don’t get a chance to meet an expert who uses this kit, you can order a fan deck and have plenty of options to watch at home.

Tried it. After our client had time to see the color samples in different lights for a few days, we chose a few for the model on the wall. Both of these factors affect how the color looks, so we don’t use pots or small paint bags but the right brand and gloss. We usually have designs in 12″x12″ or 24″x24″ squares, painted in the lightest and darkest areas of the room.

If you don’t want to put the sample directly on your wall, you can draw it on a large piece of styrofoam and visualize it.
