I hope you have a nice day. Get the 2nd and 3rd floor down so we can talk paint colors, I promise to start working on the Mason Jar collection as soon as my camera delivers the goods! Home → Best Paint Colors → Neutrals, Grays, Teals, and Whites → Benjamin Moore: 10 Best Paint Colors Dark Gray (Charcoal)
When it comes to the best dark gray paint colors, it’s all in the background. Not only that, but it’s also important to coordinate these shades with your interior decor—regardless of your personal taste. Which means if your house loves purple and you don’t, you probably need a deep clean (and a drink)
For those of you who expect EVER-ELUSIVE to be the perfect neutral gray, I hate to blow the paint parachute, but gray has a subtext. Not only gray paint colors, but also gray surfaces. That gray tile that looks neutral? Yes. Is your sectional sofa the perfect dark charcoal? You bet your booty will. Even the brand new white quartz countertop with gray texture – it has tone. Once you know the base color of the interior, choosing the best paint color will be easier (if your room is whiteboard, pay more attention to the exposure of the room).
In terms of hues you can expect, warm grays will be purple or green, while cooler grays tend to be blue, purple, or green (usually a mix).
Benjamin Moore Pale Oak Review & Inspiration Ring’s End
While the gray areas on the wood wall above look “grey”, they have strong purple undertones, making Benjamin Moore Trout Gray a great choice!
Now, if you’ve been reading the darker side of things, you’ve probably seen my blog posts about the best Sherwin Williams dark gray paint colors and the best DARK greige paint colors and taupe by Benjamin Moore. Gray and dark paint colors are hard to find because there are usually more shades than you want, so you don’t just end up with “neutral” walls. As for the gray paint color, the same. While it’s easier to achieve a neutral look on the lighter side, these shades intensify as the color gets darker.
But regardless of the subtext compared to Sherwin William’s choices, Benjamin Moore is causing some serious badass, so let’s get started.
By the way, you will notice that all these colors have an LRV below 30. Not sure what LRVs are? It could save your life PAINT LOVIN – read all about it here.

Chelsea Gray has an LRV of 22, making it a popular choice for cabinets, exterior trim, and even entire room walls! With this modest LRV, it adds just the right amount of drama and style to a space without overwhelming it.
In the dining room above, see how crisp Chelsea gray looks with white trim. You will have a similar look with the Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace in Chelsea Grey.
Chelsea Gray has a greenish tint, although sometimes you can’t see it at all. It’s also classified as a warm gray, but you won’t see it like Metropolis (soon) with the traditional warmth.
In this kitchen (below), Chelsea Gray looks plain and in low contrast with the black laminate countertops, so the white subway tiles and cabinets do the contrasting job…

Steel wool is the opposite direction (in terms of hue) of Chelsea gray. Chelsea Gray has green undertones and low warmth, while Steel Wool is a cool gray with purple-blue undertones.
The great thing about steel wool is its flexibility, it oscillates on the blue and purple end of things, not 100%. It does all this while still looking more or less “grey” as shown in another photo…
The upholstery color shown above is Benjamin Moore Cloud White, a white with a hint of warmth that offsets the cool attitude of the steel wool.
The Benjamin Moore Graystone has an LRV of close to 30, making it one of the lighter options on this page. As for this particular type of warm gray, I’d like to show you something darker, but if we just hit the squirrel’s tail with ONE SLIP, we’ll get a green that’s more distracting than a football strike (that’s not Me , I swear).
Paints We Use In Our Home
However, in terms of tone, Graystone is very good compared to slightly warmer colored edges. While he’s definitely nodding, it’s more of a polite nod than “come here.” In the photo above you can see the gray stone with white dove trim and a cheat heart door.
See how much more green there is in your next foyer, with warm white trim and a gorgeous wood front door. Remember that the exposure of your room, the interior lighting, and the ambient decoration all play an important role in the perception of color.
Seriously, I could go on and on about Grey’s…I will! Gray is not just gray, it is
A deep charcoal with a rather intense blue violet hue. I can’t even tell you how many times I have recommended this color to my online color consulting clients.

With an LRV of almost 10, it’s definitely one of the darker options – at least until everything starts looking dark and then everything gets shiny. In the photo above, notice how the semi-gloss sheen of the paint bounces off the light, making the gray look brighter than you might expect.
In the next photo, while the wooden bars need to be painted the same color as the fireplace, let’s focus on how Gray captures the darker stone in the fireplace tiles…
By the way, if you go to the paint store, you must ask for Gray 2121-10, including its number. Why? Because if you only ask for GRY, the employee says “
’ And then you find yourself in an endless loop of pain trying to figure out which shade of gray you’re talking about.
Best Neutral Paint Colors That Never Go Out Of Style
No doubt you’ll be picking up some paint samples in the near future – here! I want you to check SAMPLIZE. Samplize provides peel and stick paint samples that are more affordable, simpler and more environmentally friendly than traditional paint containers. Here are a few reasons why I recommend Samplize to my clients…
Metropolis is handmade and is one of the best warm gray paint colors on the market. Some warm grays are so lean that they can be mistaken for taupe, while others are so subtle that they don’t always have enough warmth. Metropolis sits in the middle and is a good choice, especially for some early 2000s granite countertops.
Metropolis has a purple shade that is not shy, but in no way spoils the imagination.
Amherst Gray is a very popular dark gray paint color, second only to Chelsea Gray. Amherst Grey, with an LRV of 17, is a little fleshier on the bone, but not as dark as the Kendall Charcoal (which is also good).

But remember, there are always undertones, Amherst gray is hot with green undertones and can come out depending on the environment…
I’m madly in love with trout gray because it’s just a richly pigmented gray that’s fun without being overwhelming. In terms of hue, trout gray leans more towards blue. A shade of blue turns hard into purple, as seen in this private powder room.
The LRV in Trout Gray is close to 15, making it a great addition to a wall, built-in, cabinet or any room!
While the above options are the most popular taupe paint colors, the next section covers the most neutral taupe colors. Why are they not included above? Also, they are rarely used, and this is because many interiors require gray paint
