It’s really hard to compare whites from photos, but since I’ve worked with a lot of whites, I have some estimates.
The natural gray color is actually an off-white, and although the walls appear to be white, notice the white crown molding (above).
The white dove is calm, works in different areas and is neither too cold nor too hot. This is one of those reliable colors that are perfect for older homes.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used White Dove to paint old furniture or picture frames.

The closest neutral I’ve used to this gold color is Benjamin Moore Oyster White, which looks great with oak trim.
Maybe it’s just the photography or the lighting that really makes this wet bar area shine, but I love the color. I used something similar for my first laundry room (Behr Sterling).
While the entryway and hall may be plain gray, as I mentioned at the beginning of this post, the walls appear brighter in this shot.

The last time they bought the house for themselves and their two young daughters, they agreed on a few things. the old, dilapidated house was in need of repair and modernization, and the yellow-gray paint on the house had to go. John, more concerned with interior carpentry than exterior painting, was unhappy with the options. “He expressed his interest in going green and when I said no, he changed his tune to ‘whatever you want,’” said Sally, who wanted the program to be “new and exciting”.
Note: The house was painted gray when John and Sally bought it. “This was not a common color for siding when this building was built,” Maycock said.
Also, his goal is to avoid overdoing it. “It seems that in many buildings of this period, all parts of the facade are painted in a different color,” he said. “Our house is very simple and the details are simple and we want to keep it that way.”

New England Homes Exterior Paint Color Ideas
To help them visualize the right colours, the couple turned to Susan Maycock, a historical artist and color expert for the Cambridge Historical Commission. Such professionals are valuable resources for owners who want to preserve a home’s distinctive character, he said
General contractor Tom Silva. “In addition to being familiar with the history and traditions of the neighborhood, these people often have access to photographs, drawings or documents of the construction of the house,” he said.
Color consultant Susan Mayock debuted a brick-red installation with color accents and black accents. But the family members did not sweat. “Red felt a bit ‘Victorian’ to us,” says Sally. Benjamin Moore Baked Clay (1), Baked Cumin (2) and Black (3)
There is no such document for Sal and John’s house. So Maycock dug into other sources, uncovering several paint company brochures from the 1880s and 1890s that showed color photographs of period buildings. “The colors were known to be deep and rich – lots of golds, russets and olives,” says Maycock. Many paint colors were available at the time due to the availability of mixed paints that could be shipped by train. “Colors like the gray in this house were rare in the Victorian era,” Maycock said. “Those colors didn’t come out until the 1890s.”
Historical Paint Colors Making A Comeback
After hitting the books, Maycock introduced a variety of colors. For a shift, her suggestions range from brick red to deep mustard yellow, a complementary color for each decor and a neutral color or two for moving parts like windows and doors.

Of all the options presented by Maycock, Sally was used the most in the mustard design, paired with cream and black. To get a better feel for what it looks like in real life, Sally applied color to a digital image of her home using computer software. “It was a big help,” he said. “It gave us an idea of where we wanted to go.”
Result? “I don’t like it,” Sally said. “It looked good, sick. Mustard may have been popular at the time, but I wanted something brighter.” Since the neighborhood has similar-looking homes, she and John wandered the streets looking for inspiration for a color that suited their taste.

That inspiration came from a nearby house that was painted yellow. “It’s a very different color than the mustard tones we’ve seen,” Sally said. “It was brighter and more exciting, and we found it right at home.”
When she and John told their architect, Mauro Henrich, about the place they saw, he drew a picture of the house and took it to a local paint shop to match it and match the colors. Then, armed with two different paints, he painted large pictures on the side of the house so the couple could compare. Here’s what Maycock always recommends. make sure the swatches are large enough (about 2 to 3 feet) to get a good idea of how each color will play in different lighting and weather conditions. “The computer data is great, but the colors are not accurate,” he said. “Color might look good on your laptop, but when you put it on the edge, it’s a whole different story.”
