Benjamin Moore Interior Stain Colours – Just found you on Pinterest. Great shelves. I googled the best neutral wall paint with stained wood and found you again!
I am desperate. Contractors arrive Monday to fix all the damage from Massachusetts’ many hellish winters. The wood is mostly medium oak stain in a Victorian building in Brooklyn, New York, built in 1880.

My husband and I are divorcing, but I’m staying here and I want this place. Finally!

And no, it’s not because we were debating whether to paint the stained wood trim or leave it stained.
I read another post you wrote about a faded tree and laughed a lot because it sounds like my soon-to-be husband; what is your name Laundry rag? ha ha! Too much Laurel!
I really liked the old lady’s wood finish and many people told me it would be a mistake to paint it. But I want this place to impress. And BTW, I’m feeling very inspired by some of your recent posts, especially the one from the other day about Laura painting her music room, Jack Pine.
Another thing, when the contractor offered me to paint all the painted wood pieces, I almost passed out. This made the whole job more than twice as expensive. It is not possible!

It’s just that the walls are such a weird yellow and it’s not really me and it doesn’t look very good with all the wood. But I want to feel elevated here.
So I have my Benjamin Moore fan decks and if you could point me to some of the best colors to make my painted wood trim sing!
In this post, we’re going to look at a few things about painted wood trim and talk about some colors. Then I created a table for you with 16 of my favorite colors that look great with wood trim.
And then I put a small sample of wood next to the chip on the card to see how they look together. More on that later.

How do you know if you should keep the painted wood trim or paint the painted wood trim?
That’s a great question and here’s how I feel about it. In most cases, it is simply a matter of choice.
But there are times when you shouldn’t paint stained wood because the architect wanted to paint it. Also, he is a legend like Frank Lloyd Wright, who is famous and dead. And if you paint his beautiful oak, he will be forced to leave his grave and hit you hard in the knees with his architectural scale!
If you live in a house built by Frank Lloyd Wright, painting painted wood would be like Mona Lisa’s mustache. (Leonardo would probably like that.) 😉
Best Wall Colors To Go With Stained Wood Trim
The same is true of many architectural styles such as Arts and Crafts, AKA Craftsman Style and sometimes Shingle Style. Although some Craftsman style homes were painted and still are.
And to be honest, I’ve softened my stance (a bit) on painted wood trim vs. painted wood trim, and that’s why.
First, trim, if you didn’t already know, is made of wood, including window and door frames, baseboards, stair railings, paneling, paneling, and cabinets. Oh, and sometimes boxes or beams in the ceiling.
Below is a New York Brownstone. Happy dogs! I have seen these houses with painted wood trim and painted as shown below. In this case, I prefer to paint, but I have seen some beautiful rooms, for example, with painted wood trim that looks beautiful.

This is another craftsman from an architectural office that I have long admired. No stained wood trim except for the doors. And it’s a legitimate design decision. Typically in the 19th and 18th centuries, doors were painted a rich chestnut color rather than painted.
Either well. You’re right. They are historic craftsman houses. While I appreciate them, I wouldn’t like it.
If you have one of these and want to paint it, I have no problem with that. If you want to keep the stained wood finish, that’s great too.
It’s true. If you live in a post-war house with wood trim, you can probably paint it, unless it’s an ultra-modern house. And you may need to add more listings to get interest unless the house is strictly modern.

The first one is sad for me. However, it is also important to remember that no relatively simple, painted room comes to life until the furniture is restored.
Below is a great example of an old house with beautiful stained wood and matching paint color.
A color you might not have thought of but looks great with painted wood trim is a warm, rich red like Benjamin Moore RACING ORANGE – 2169-10.
In fact, many orange colors look fantastic with wood finishes. Here is a post full of beautiful orange colors.

I think so. Although I prefer a more classic stucco, Gil Shaffer has stood his ground in exquisite sandstone.
You should probably consult a professional, but they may be able to go over the finish to make it deeper. You can’t lighten painted woodwork, but sometimes you can give it a deeper, richer color.
There is a product from Minwax called Polyshades. It’s a stain and a polymer in one. You may need two or three coats, but it may be worth it to make the tree beautiful again. If you can’t afford a professional, I would experiment first.
She didn’t use polyenes, but several other techniques that didn’t require full restoration. You can read more about it in the link below the first picture.
The Colour Handbook
In fact, most colors are acceptable. Cool colors with gray always look good. Most of the colors in the Laurel Home paint collection are beautiful with a mottled wood finish.
It’s a bad picture, but it can be a very nice room with the right wall color.
Another great color with a wood finish is a warm deep brownish purple. But not PURPLE! One of my favorites is ELEPHANT GRAY 2109-50. It’s a subtle color and shade that provides less contrast, looks elegant when paired with a mid-tone stained wood finish.
Clear. Why not? It’s really cool. If you don’t know the above blog, check it out. Her house is full of woodwork and any room like the one above is cooler than cool!

Brown and black with a black ceiling! I’m sure if I only had one house I would never do it, but if I had 2 or 3 houses – absolutely!
The light blue gray is a refreshing change with this rich mahogany finish. Love it with a cane that refreshes the formality.
Please note that this is an indication of the color of the stain and depending on the color of the individual elements, it may change color slightly.

Some of these wood colors are of course interchangeable. But some combinations I think are particularly beautiful.
Ahhh…that’s the point. I say this because there is more to consider than just the color of the walls and trim.
For Laura, the starting point was the woodwork and the organ. She knew instinctively that she needed a strong color to make everything work together.
