I painted a nursery for a client who really wanted to use Benjamin Moore Regal Select paint and one of their colors instead of the Sherwin Williams paint I was using. Having used Regal Select interior paint a few years ago with good results, I thought this would be a good opportunity to use the paint again for a review.
Benjamin Moore Regal Select Paint
For this painting project, I painted nursery walls with Benjamin Moore Super White color (OC-152), with a pearlescent, satin-like finish. Pearl finish is brighter and cleans better, but less shiny than semi-gloss.

My overall experience using Regal paint for this purpose has been very positive. I painted only the walls with this product, using Behr urethane alkyd enamel (supplied by my client) for the trim and door. The walls were previously painted black gray and required a special coat to cover the Super White without forcing multiple coats.
Like most expensive paints, Regal Select is self-priming, but I lifted the gray walls in the white nursery with one coat of Insl-X Aqua Lock water first. If you are painting a very light color over a dark color, it is cheaper and better to use a small coat of primer instead of buying a gallon of premium paint and applying several coats.
Light, bright wall paint will cover well over dark colors without a flat surface, even if your paint is ‘upgraded’. For more information on self-painting, see my article What you need to know about all-in-one painting and first.
I have had no problems using Benjamin Moore Regal Select for this or previous painting projects. If you like Benjamin Moore, you can’t go wrong with this painting. The paint covered well in two coats over the primer with little flaking or smell. For those looking for VOC free paint, this is a great choice. The paint also dries quickly. I was able to apply the second coat about an hour after the first coat.

The Regal Select is a more affordable alternative to the Benjamin Moore Aura. If you don’t want to fork over $100 a gallon for that paint, go for the Regal line. This is one of the best Benjamin Moore paints I’ve used so far, and it’s even better than the original Regal Classic.
But if $70 a gallon is too steep, go with Ben Benjamin Moore or one of the cheaper paints from Sherwin Williams. Is Benjamin Moore paint better than Sherwin Williams? I have used Sherwin Williams paint for over twenty years. Their Long Home paint is similar to the Regal Select in performance. Both brands sell good and bad paints, but I don’t believe one is better than the other.

Benjamin Moore Regal Select Paint With Primer
The gloss of a paint is its level of brightness or gloss. In general, imperfections are better hidden with flat finishes and a glossy finish lasts longer.
Flat (0-5% gloss) – Suitable for less-than-perfect surfaces, low-speed areas, and areas where a lack of gloss is required, such as ceilings.
Salad shell (gloss 15-25%) – a common wall accent, flat gloss that hides some imperfections but is easy to keep clean.
1 gallon of paint covers ~400 square feet. Even 1 gallon of paint covers ~100 square feet. To estimate how much paint you need, go through these steps:
