Luster of a color is its degree of gloss or shine. In general, a flat finish hides imperfections better, while a glossy finish is more durable.

I replaced my usual Sherwin Williams paint with Benjamin Moore Regal Select paint and painted the nursery for a client who really wanted to use one of their colors. Having used Regal Select Interior Paint a few years ago with good results, I thought this would be a good opportunity to use the paint again for a review.
For this painting project, I painted the nursery walls in Benjamin Moore Color Super White (OC-152), using a satin-like pearl finish. Pearl finishes are glossy and last longer in the wash, but less glossy than semi-gloss.
Benjamin Moore Introduces Enhanced BenĀ® Interior Paint
My overall experience using Regal Paint for this project was very positive. I only painted the walls with this product, I used Behr urethane alkyd enamel (supplied by my client) for the trim and doors. The walls were previously painted dark gray and required a separate coat of primer to help the super white cover without applying multiple coats.
Like most high-end paints, Regal Select is self-priming, but I primed the nursery white gray walls with one coat of Insl-X Aqua Lock water-based primer. If you’re painting a light color instead of a dark one, it’s cheaper and more effective to use an inexpensive primer instead of buying gallons of extra high-quality paint and applying multiple coats.
Glossy white wall paint does not cover well against dark colors without a flat primer, even if your paint is “self-primed”. For more information on do-it-yourself paint, see my article What you need to know about all-in-one paint and primer.
I had no problems using Benjamin Moore Regal Select on this painting project or on previous projects. If you’re a fan of Benjamin Moore, you can’t go wrong with this color. The paint covered well in two coats over the primer with very little spatter or smell. This is a great choice for those wanting a zero VOC paint. The paint also dries very quickly. I was able to apply the second coat about an hour after the first coat.
Benjamin Moore’s RegalĀ® Select Interior Paint
The Regal Select is a great alternative to the more expensive Benjamin Moore Aura. If you don’t want to pay over $100 per gallon for this paint, go with the Regal line. It is one of the best Benjamin Moore paints I have ever used and performs better than the original Regal Classic.
But if $70 a gallon is too expensive, go with Benjamin Moore’s Ben or one of the less expensive Sherwin Williams paints. Does Benjamin Moore paint better than Sherwin Williams? I have been using Sherwin Williams paint for over twenty years. Their Durability Home Paints are similar in performance to Regal Select. Both brands sell good and bad ink, but I don’t believe one is better than the other.
