Sherwin-Williams and Benjamin Moore are two of the largest paint retailers in the United States. If you’re in the market for paint, you’re probably starting to wonder about the difference between the two. Both just a huge selection of products and colors.
We talked to experts at five image companies to get their take on the two brands. For the most part, everyone said that they all have several good product lines backed by great R&D programs. But there are few cases where they prefer one over the other.

When we asked interior designers and color experts for recommendations on paint colors for living, they gave a mix of the two companies, but generally recommended more options from Benjamin Moore.
“Different products have different strengths when it comes to color,” said color consultant Amy Cera. “If I’m going to go more gray, beige and blue, I look more at Sherwin-Williams. Benjamin Moore sometimes has brighter colors, a little more color that’s stronger,” he said. “So I have to make sure I’m wearing the company color.”
“Usually, I say, people will choose any color,” Travis Nolan, founder of Old Crow Poetry. Nine out of ten said both teams could match.
However, Benjamin Moore explained the Aura line, which seems to be a bit difficult to get right. Matt Kunz, president of Five Star Painting, and Michael Camper of M&M Precision Painting said Sherwin-Williams has the best color matching software and mixer.

Camper told the brand that it only needs one layer, another and first you have to do the walls first. “Put two coats on for the best quality,” he said.
“I have a lot of people who like to use Benjamin Moore’s Regal Select or Aura, especially if you’re in a sunny location,” Kunz said.
Nolan Sherwin-Williams mentioned the resilience of Florida’s climate. The sun burns the water molecules between the paint and the wood, trying to melt through the paint. “They paint right away in detail, and that’s why we get a lot of film here,” he said. The softness dries quickly and withstands heat and humidity.
Both Kunz and Camper said if your crew pushes a certain type of paint, it’s because they know how to get the best results with it.
Benjamin Moore Paint Reviews
“We found that if some workers are going to use paint types, they rely on what they know without even thinking,” Kunz said. “They have even coverage. They know how to use a roller – they need everything for a certain type of paint.”
Camper likes to use certain products again and again for the same reason. “I know the characteristics of it, how it flows, what summer it is, if it’s better for running,” he said.
Almost everyone we spoke to also recommended using a higher quality, more expensive paint. With cheap paint, “if you want to hire a professional painter and you want to do a good job, they have to finish, usually using product on the decks, so they get paid more for the job,” says Camper. say
Materials, including paint, make up about 10 percent of the total cost, so it makes more sense to save on labor if possible, he said.

If you paint yourself, the price calculation is slightly different than with professionals. It also has the biggest price tag.
Although more expensive, self-leveling paints such as Benjamin Moore Aura or Sherwin-Williams Emerald Urethane (for finishing) are more forgiving of wall imperfections and streaks.
If you want an easy-to-touch paint, Camper recommends Benjamin Moore. At Sherwin-Williams, “the more layers you put on, the brighter it is,” he said. Although glosses (brighter spots on the wall look like colored paint) tend to occur with glossier colors than matte or flat colors, Camper said Benjamin Moore satin is easier to touch than nail satin. from Sherwin-Williams.
Painting a cabinet is a tedious process. Cabinets are also exposed to bumps, grease, steam and other hazards.

The Best White Paint Colors
Wood color: Once you have chosen a family color or a specific color, you need to combine different shades. “Paint sheets are a great way to streamline the process,” Sue Wadden, director of paint marketing at Sherwin-Williams, told me. It’s hard to tell if a color is warm or cool unless you have something to compare it to.
Website tools: Paint Brush Rit’s Laura Bruqi said the two companies “have nice, user-friendly websites where we can ask customers to pick a paint.” Both have programs that allow you to take pictures of what your room will look like with the new paint, even though it’s not really the same.

Sample bottles: If you’re stuck between a few colors, you can buy a small amount of colors from both companies and try them out. Greg Agosta, owner of Level 5 Finish Line, recommends painting a poster instead of a wall. If you paint them on the walls, covering them up will require additional prep work and coatings when you’re ready to apply the final paint. Also, these models are for testing purposes only and are not as durable as the real thing.
