Many homeowners are tired of the tone of the place and the heaviness of the “Tuscan” series. People who have painted wood in their homes (especially cabinets) now want to paint. But should you paint your brick home just for design reasons? Is there another reason to paint or stain brick? I love painted brick houses, so I want to start with the “damage” to get out of the practical considerations.
If your brick house isn’t painted properly, any moisture that leaks out can cause the paint to chip and, in the worst case scenario, damage the brick over time. You don’t want water getting into your paint through cracks or gaps near windows and doors, so it’s important to properly prepare your home before painting. (If your home has a brick fireplace or a feature wall, moisture isn’t a problem.)
What can you do to prevent water from getting under your paint and damaging your brick over time? Use a professional painting company to paint the exterior of the brick. Don’t use the cheapest. This is not just a proposition. Pro painters are more eagle-eyed than homeowners when it comes to cracks or gaps that need carving or filling. They will use a primer with the right pH balance for the stone and the right color to allow the brick to “breathe”. These products will be applied with a uniform coat that is thick enough to protect your brick from the outside elements, but not too thick to wear over time. If there is enough contrast between the various elements of your house and the existing brick, and if you are happy with the color of your brick, then you can leave it. The key is to have enough conflicting elements. The edges of your white vinyl windows won’t cut it. This is an example where design elements such as pediments, door and window frames, and shutters have enough weight to cover most of the brickwork.
