Best House Paint Colors Exterior – Painting the exterior of your home is a big decision. Just like painting your kitchen, there’s no room for error when changing the color of your home’s exterior—it’s an expensive endeavor that should last for decades and create an eye-catching appeal to all who pass by.

New home exterior design services help homeowners re-evaluate their home’s potential and avoid the mistakes of choosing the wrong or unsightly colors.

We’ve partnered with Benjamin Moore Color Director Andrea Magno to curate a curated selection of exterior colors available to clients as part of our exterior design package.

Best Exterior Paint Colors For Your House

CEO Allison Messner sat down with Andrea to learn more about how to choose a new paint or stain for your home’s exterior. The goal: to create a home that feels “well designed.” (Andrea’s words of wisdom) Here’s what we learned!

“When it comes to exterior paint, many people don’t know where to start,” says Andrea Magno, Benjamin Moore’s color director. Andrea’s advice: “Look at your landscape.” Consider the color palette of your softscape and hardscaping options when deciding on house colors. If you lean toward cool-toned floors like pea gravel, bluestone, or concrete and plants like sage, grass, olive, and agave, choose cool colors like Nimbus Gray or Decorator’s White for your home. If you’re aiming for warm floors and plants, choose color combinations for your home’s exterior that reflect that—warm coats, purples, dark browns, grays, and greens.

“We see a lot of people choosing colors based on the topography and climate of their area,” says Andrea. “The vision becomes the point of inspiration.” In the Southwest, many homeowners choose a combination of organic and refreshing colors that they see in the natural world around them. In the Pacific Northwest, “we see a lot of splotches and deep colors that mimic the local forest, sky and ocean.”

Researching the architectural style of your home is also helpful. For example, Craftsman-style homes often use earth tones and jewel tones for exterior colors, traditional homes lean toward cool neutrals with high contrast, and Spanish homes look great with warm neutrals. There we often see people choosing landscaping based on the architectural style of their home, although we’d love for people to change it – a modern home with a traditional English garden would look great. We still see many people in traditional homes gravitating toward modern, low-maintenance yards.

There is no “right” choice when it comes to exterior paint or stain – choose something that “makes you happy”. To find the seed, think about what inspires you, whether it’s a painted door in Italy or a rustic cabin in Montana. Or maybe it’s the white exterior of the farmhouse you grew up in (like the one above). Let that inspiration guide your color ideas.

One thing that many people don’t realize is that Benjamin Moore classifies their colors by LRV, which stands for Light Reflectance Value. Andrea explains:

“Reflectance value (or often abbreviated LRV) refers to the amount of light reflected from a surface when illuminated by a light source such as the sun. LRV is measured on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 is the lowest LRV and 100 is the highest. The LRV of each color was posted on Benjamin Moore’s fan page.”

In order to reduce energy consumption, it is important to keep the LRV in mind when choosing colors for your home. In hot climates, choose high LRV colors to reflect light, which cools the home and requires less air conditioning. The opposite is true in colder climates. For those of us in the north, consider low LRV paint, which absorbs heat and helps offset heating costs.

Darkness Reigns: Architects’ 8 Favorite Black Exterior Paint Colors

Architectural details are often what bring a home to life, so it’s important not to overlook accents. Using high-gloss paint to accent trim, windows and front doors can make a big difference in the overall look of your outdoor space. And, no, the trim color doesn’t have to be white – black accents and trims are on trend! Consider your favorite bold exterior color, but a great tip: make sure your home’s base and accent colors are the same shade to make the home feel “good.”

Andrea’s favorite accent idea right now: Paint the ceiling of your outdoor patio. It gives your home’s exterior an unexpected and colorful personality.

The Black House isn’t going anywhere! If you love the trend but fear it’s too “modern,” Andrea now thinks navy, blue, gray, black, charcoal, or dark gray are timeless neutrals.

Just as you can use color to highlight favorite features of your home, you can also use it to hide elements. Consider painting the outside of your AC unit or an opaque stain to help it fade.

Best Exterior House Color Schemes

Just like the colors you choose for your interior spaces, the exterior colors of your home should be colors that bring a smile to your face the next day. However, if you are planning to put your home on the market in the near future, it is wise to consider which exterior color will attract the most buyers.

“Neutral, traditional colors are a good bet if you’re getting ready to sell the exterior of your home,” says Elizabeth Mendenhall, a Columbia, Missouri, realtor and past president of the National Association of Realtors. “You want to look warm and inviting. Unique colors can turn off some potential buyers.” If you’re repainting, consider these 12 exterior house colors with undeniable curb appeal.

“The color you paint your home’s exterior can make or break how people feel about your home,” says Erica Woelfel, Behr Paints vice president of painting and creative services. Behr’s Smoky White (BWC-13) looks amazing in this farmhouse style home, but looks dated in a colonial.

“Yellow in the home immediately says ‘happy,’” says interior designer Carla Aston of Aston Design Studio in The Woodlands, Texas. To attract the most potential buyers, stick to a lighter shade, such as Behr’s Corn Stack (M290-3), paired with Cottage White (#13) on top of the roof.

Whether your home is located on the American coast or in a cozy suburb, fresh color combinations like light blue and deep aqua can complement the architectural elements. Seen here, Behr’s Watery (HDC-CT-26) in Light Blue Metallic (HDC-AC-25) provides a soothing background for shutters and doors.

St. Minnesota’s Lewis Park posted a photo of the renovation online, saying he’s “received thousands of requests for this color!” And what is the magic combination? Benjamin Moore Copley Gray (HC-104) decorated with Benjamin Moore Elephant Tusk (OC-8).

In keeping with the natural trend, Jackie Jordan, former director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams, found taupe to be one of the company’s most popular choices among exterior neutral colors. “Stick to classic neutrals is a great way to play it safe when you’re planning to sell your home,” says Jordan. A navy-gray shade like the one shown in this example “has a nautical, soothing feel,” said Amy Hendel, director of marketing for Hendel Homes in Waysata, Minn., who oversaw the renovation of this waterfront home. “It’s a nice complement to the white trim.” Here, Sherwin-Williams’ Needlepoint Navy (SW 0032) is crowned by Antiquarian Brown (SW 0045); Both are from the American company Heritage Palette.
