Best Neutral Exterior Paint Colors – Updating your exterior is one of the fastest ways to increase home value, and using the right colors can add instant curb appeal. What are the “true” colors for 2021? Read on to discover 7 of the top trends of the year.
I’ll start with neutrals because they’re always a good choice for the home. In recent years gray has been a neutral color. The best color trend forecasters know that gray isn’t going away, but you can see it warming up. Grey, gray and gray with colored undertones join true gray in the foreground. This year, beige (yes, it’s back) and other neutrals have been able to increase demand for hues as we move away from classic gray exteriors and see a move towards more earthy neutrals and pops of color.

PPG Paints palette color trends show a progression from cool and neutral grays to warmer greys, grays and beiges. Their most popular colors include Mercurial PPG1006-4, a mid-tone wood gray with warm cocoa brown. Shadow Taupe PPG14-01 is a soft, fresh gray with a hint of red. Transcend PPG1079-4 is a medium brown sugary beige with a hint of gingerbread.
The Best Light Gray Paint Colors
Benjamin Moore has only one gray among the 12 trend colors for 2021 and it is simply called Kingsport Gray HC-86. This color is a deep, warm gray, a color that mixes gray and beige or brown. Silhouette AF-655, another popular color, combines deep charcoal gray and rich brown for a warm, sultry shade. Now you can see how warm the gray tones are.
Sherwin-Williams named a similar deep shade, Urbane Bronze SW 7048, as its Color of the Year for 2021. Urbane Bronze is another deep neutral that straddles the line between brown and charcoal. It’s a stunning tone, described by the company as “its natural simplicity and strength inspired by nature creates a sense of calm right from the start.” If you look at all the Sherwin-Williams trend colors, you’ll see that the closest to true gray are Crushed Ice SW 7647 and Cyberspace SW 7076.
Also, Behr color trends include many colors from warm gray to beige, such as Barnwood Gray PPU24-07, Almond Wisp PPU5-12 and Modern Mocha N150-4.
I never recommend choosing the main colors for your exterior based on trends. You can be trendy with your front door, but trends don’t dictate the direction of your overall color scheme. How Exterior Paint Colors Can Boost Your Home’s Value
Sophisticated and classic neutrals are all the rage right now and are perfect for most homes. Since more and more homes are using a mix of exterior materials—brick, stone, slate, shake, copper—warmer neutrals are the best color to tie these elements into a cohesive exterior design. Warmth and earth unite the environment and surrounding houses in all regions of the country.
Warm neutral tones create a sense of well-being and this is an influence that is mentioned in many different fashion reports. The cool colors of the spa, while still popular, are giving way to a warmer counterpart that evokes a feeling of not only calm and relaxation, but also care and nurturing. The overall theme of the Benjamin Moore Color Trends 2021 palette is to “nourish the spirit with soothing, sunny colors that radiate warmth and well-being.” Even their color of the year, Aegean Teal 2136-40, an exciting teal, invites us to rethink and change.
Baer recommends pushing your comfort zone and creating an experience in any space by pairing neutrals with blues, greens and other natural colors that have a solid and strong feel and connect us to the earth.
But not all colors are neutral this year. Anything but! There are many deep, rich tones and rich, bright colors.
Exterior Paint Color Combinations
Sherwin-Williams invites you to move fearlessly into the future with modern shades like Commodore SW 6524, Swimming SW 6764, Limón Fresco SW 9030. These colors may not be suitable for the whole house, but they add a lot of personality to your door.
There are many ways to use 2021 color palettes inside and outside the home. PPG Colors, whose trend colors always seem closer to what I predict based on my research, includes “versatile shades that can be used as a base or dominant color in a room.”
This year instead of the color of the year they chose the color palette of the year which includes three colors. Transcend is a mid-tone oatmeal shade that draws on earthy influences and nostalgia. Described as “an antidote to the age of cool grays, this comfortable neutral is like a hot latte on a cool morning or warm sand on a summer’s day. Big Cypress, a shaded ginger with a hint of lotus, is the equivalent of a big, a comforting hug in your home Misty Aqua, a watercolor cerulean blue, brings an unexpected freshness to otherwise warm, earthy tones.

Benjamin Moore is one of our favorite sources for exterior paint colors. Among our favorites from their 2023 collection, we’ve narrowed it down to the best shades below.
Dark and dark exterior paint colors aren’t going anywhere, and Benjamin Moore’s Nightfall is a great choice. This dark gray color with a subtle hint of blue is reminiscent of midnight (hence the name). At 6.36 LRV, it’s really dark. (Learn more about LRV and why it’s so important to paint exteriors here.)
Exterior Paint Color Combinations To Try
We wanted to combine Nightfall with natural building materials: wood, brick and stone. Its depth brings out the layers of modern homes as they did in the past. On the other hand, this shade can brighten facades with lots of mixed materials, like the one below.
Taking a few steps darker, we find ourselves with Rygen Green. With an LRV of 4.19, Regent Green can appear almost black in some lights. However, Benjamin Moore lists it as a deep, muted green pine. You can notice the jewel-like blue tones in the rendering above. This home is a favorite of our team members because the Regent Green brings out the natural blue and green of the stone frontage. The back of the house is more modern, with gray on the top level and almost black below. Regent Green brings it all together.
Bear Creek is one of our favorite outdoor neutrals for 2023. It’s deep, rich and woodsy with a distinct smoky brown undertone. Upstairs, Bear Creek brings warmth to a contemporary exterior with plenty of industrial touches.
The upcoming outdoor color of 2023 is chameleon. In some runs, like the one above, the rain in November can be almost white. However, it is actually a light gray with a subtle green tint. Notice how the reds and purples of the stone house in this design tone down the green and make the November rain look cleanly neutral.
Best Paint Colors For Selling In 2022
We’ve been saying it for years – beige is back. This is a great choice for homeowners looking for a neutral mid-range with depth and warmth. Grant Beige is a particular favorite of our expert outdoor designers because of its versatility. It has the same combination of gray and beige shades with a slight green tint. In the modern home, the designer suggests Grant Beige as a field color because it creates warmth and softness as a balance in everything.
