Best Paint Colors For East Facing Rooms – It can affect your perception. Natural light has a different color and intensity depending on where it comes from. If the beige color that used to look good in your home is now looking pink, or your favorite gray looks more purple in the bedroom, it’s probably because you’re comparing rooms with different exposures.
This article will tell you how natural light affects interior paint color (at least in the Northern Hemisphere). I’ve also included some suggestions for neutral paint colors that go well with the lighting in this room. But before we get into the details, let’s look at some important things when choosing an interior paint color.
Best Paint Colors For East Facing Rooms
Always test the paint color in the room you plan to use it in before applying it to the wall and starting to trim! (We send a virtual color consultation customer an 8″ x 10″ printout of our recommendations.)
The Best Neutral Wall Colors In 2022
Rooms with north-facing windows are cooler and have a more grayish tint. Even with lots of windows and lots of sunlight, the color of the light is still pretty cool. This means that paint in cold tones (certain shades of blue, gray, green, and white) can feel cold in a north-facing room. Painting the north-facing room with warm or warm neutrals can counteract this cool effect.
Edgecomb Gray HC-173 is a beautiful creamy gray for homeowners who want a shade of gray that is not too cold.
Navajo White OC-95 is a light cream color. The blue light from the north facing room counteracts the yellow color of this paint color and gives it a good balance.
A popular color, Grant Beige HC-83 is a dark tan with a slight gray slanting. It looks best in a bright north-facing room.
The Best Paint Colors For Dark Rooms
Rooms with south-facing windows are filled with warm yellow light as the afternoon approaches. In the morning this room will be shaded so the color of this room may look a bit flat. If a south-facing room is too bright during the day, a cool shade or gray can help offset all of the warm light. The use of warm colors in this room will further enhance the visual warmth of the room.
Balanced Beige SW 7037 is a beautiful, warm taupe, one of my personal favourites. The combination of brown and gray is no less tasty than traditional beige. Works best in a room with a lot of afternoon sunlight with a south-facing window.
Brown Owl OC-52 is a soft, warm brown that is not cold. In a room that doesn’t get a lot of direct sunlight, the colors are a little more subdued.
Ballet White OC-9 is a light, creamy gray with a slightly warm feel. This color can bring a lot of light and warmth to a room, but it might be too neutral for a south-facing room that doesn’t get a lot of direct sunlight.
The #1 Secret To Choosing A Paint Color
East (and west) facing rooms are difficult to analyze because of the inconsistent light. East facing rooms have a slightly warmer bright and soft morning light. As the sun rises, the light shines into an east-facing room, and during the day the paint color can look a little dull. After noon, rooms with east-facing windows will look a little dimmer and darker. This space works best with warm colors. Cool tones can feel a bit gloomy during the day.
Macadamia SW 6142 is a light medium neutral, golden beige color that is not flat even in the afternoon.
Creamy SW 7012 is one of the few off-white products that can be used alone in an east facing room. It warms the room without being too yellow.
Techno Gray SW 6170 is a warm gray color. With a slight green bias, this color keeps you warm in the cool afternoon light of an east-facing room.
North, East, South, West Facing Rooms
West facing rooms get less morning sunlight. After noon, the light gradually warms up and brightens, then increases in intensity during the day. A room with a western exposure looks good with both warm and warm colors, but keep in mind that the afternoon sun emphasizes the intensity and depth of warm tones.
If you have windows on multiple walls, you are dealing with multiple exposures. In general, more attention is paid to the main exposure of the room. The good news is that you have more flexibility when it comes to your personal color preferences.
A room with a southwest exposure has a stronger warm, bright light later in the afternoon, while a northeast exposure has a cooler, grayish glow throughout the day. A room with a southeast window gives off a soft, warm light all day long, bright in the morning and slightly washed out in the afternoon, softened by the intense afternoon sun and east exposure. The northwest-exposed room is cold and gray during the day and only has warm light in the afternoon.

Like many bloggers, I get a lot of questions about my home. So, starting with this post here, we’re working hard on some updates behind the site to make all these resources easier to find! As you can see…I like neutral colors. No big surprises! However, there are subtle differences between them that make these colors stick to each other as you work in each room.
A Brief Guide To Understanding Sun Exposures
One of the biggest things to consider when choosing a paint color is where you live. Being in the Pacific Northwest with a very gray gray climate, I prefer paints that give them some warmth. Anything that feels cold in our bleak winters is true. Colors that work well here may not work either.
Another thing to consider when choosing a paint color is the amount of light in the room and the direction in which it comes in. This will help guide you through color choices using common sense. Knowing when to be saturated or soft and when to be warm or cool will help you figure out whether to lean towards blue, gray or white. You know that every time you paint a room, you need to test a sample on the wall. I like to start with the color I want and go a notch lighter and darker, or warmer and cooler to see what really comes out on my walls. All of these colors are a good starting point because every room has different lighting, but they won’t look the same in my room.
That said, here’s a general guide to understanding the lighting in your space and how it affects your paint choices.
Answer: Indirect lighting all day long. Go warmer to Mallington to counteract this subtle glow that can create drab colors. Saturated colors appear darker, and light tones are softer and slightly duller.

In a room that changes a lot throughout the day, it’s probably too bright. Whatever color you choose for this room, think it should be dynamic. Dark colors look brighter, and bright whites can be too intense.
You will want to think and use the space in both east-west facing rooms. Because the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, it makes the light more direct, but it changes dramatically everywhere.
