Common sense suggests that the best color to paint a room with little natural light is white. After all, what makes a room look brighter and brighter than bright white walls? Contrary to popular belief, the best color for dimly lit rooms is actually not white. An all-white room can only make it feel dull and uninspiring, instead of giving it the light and airy feel we all crave. Ready to see your dark space in a whole new light?

If you’re stuck in a dark room, why not go outside and go for an all-black look? This color looks great on built-in shelves or even painted all over the walls and ceiling for a warm and dramatic look. Charlie Cosby, creative director at Farrow & Balls, explains: “When choosing a color for your home, it’s important to consider architecture, purpose, shape, direction of the space and light, as they all play a role in changing how colors look.

Best Neutral Paint Colors

Camel colors can be intimidating, but this deep, warm color is the perfect backdrop for a cozy breakfast room or living room. Simply combine it with other rich neutrals for a beautiful effect.

This gray-green shade complements nature beautifully and looks great in a Scandinavian-style living room with neutral colors.

In north-facing rooms, which get very little natural light, Cosby recommends avoiding white: “North-facing rooms can be difficult to decorate because they are naturally darker. In these spaces, we recommend you to use bright colors and embrace what nature has provided. Dark colors can be used to create drama and intimacy.”

If you’re feeling adventurous, try a deep plum like this Prince color from color startup Clare. This moody color pairs well with warm neutrals to create a cozy atmosphere that’s perfect for a living room or TV room.

While this color is on the lighter side, the mauve-gray tone is to create an almost neutral and moody feel. We can imagine this color in a relaxing bedroom with different colors.

This almost black shade of blue is perfect for creating a dark and dramatic feel in a living room or dining room. Try to combine it with cool shades of blue and gray.

Start by experimenting with colors at home to see how color choices respond to changing light in the room and how well they coordinate with the features of the room.

Due to its high pigment content, Farrow & Ball is the number one choice for deep tones. This plum shade looks amazing in a small, changeable space like a child’s room or a dark hallway.

Aren’t you afraid of color? Try this forest green shade in a dark room like an office with built-in shelves or a kitchen with natural light.

Aren’t you afraid of color? It’s a wild bold red and looks great in a powder room or dining room to set a lively mood for entertaining.

A lighter choice than other dark colors, this misty shade adds a warm atmosphere to a small space. Use it in the bedroom and combine it with gray colors with black accents.

We think that this dark grayish brown can create a rustic and warm atmosphere in a library or a TV room, it can affect your perception. Natural light varies in color and intensity depending on where it comes from. If the beige that looked great in your previous home now looks pink, or your favorite gray is more purple in your bedroom, it might be because you’re comparing rooms with different lighting.

The Best Interior White Paint Colors

In this article, I will teach you how natural light affects interior colors (at least in the Northern Hemisphere). I have also included suggestions for neutral colors that work well with the lighting of these spaces. But before we get into the details, let’s pay attention to the important points in choosing interior colors…

Always test the color of the room you intend to use it in before you start spreading and cutting on your walls! (We send 8″ x 10″ color swatches of our offerings to our virtual color consultation clients.)

Rooms with north facing windows usually have colder and gray light. Even with lots of windows and lots of sun, the light color stays relatively cool. This means that cool colors (blues, grays, greens, and some whites) can feel colder in a north-facing room. Painting north-facing rooms with a warm color or even a warm neutral color can balance this cold effect.

Edgecomb Gray HC-173 is a lovely creamy gray for homeowners who want a more gray shade without feeling cold.

Navajo White OC-95 is a light cream color. Blue light in a north-facing room will neutralize the yellow in this color and give it a nice balance.

Grant Beige HC-83, a popular shade, is a cool tan with a hint of gray. It looks great in a well-lit, north-facing room.

Rooms with south-facing windows are bathed in warm, yellow light in the afternoon. In the morning these rooms can be shadowy which makes the color in this room look a bit flat. If your south-facing room is too bright in the afternoon, a cool or gray color can help balance the warm glow. The use of warm colors in this room makes the visual warmth of the space seem more intense.

Balanced Beige SW 7037 is a beautiful warm tapestry and one of my personal favorites. The combination of gray and brown makes it less warm than traditional beige. It works great in a room that gets a lot of afternoon sun through south-facing windows.

How Natural Light Affects Interior Paint Colors

Gray Owl OC-52 is a soft, warm gray that is not frosty. In a room where there is not much direct sunlight, the color will be a little more muted

Ballet White OC-9 is a light, creamy gray with a slightly warm feel. This color can bring a lot of light and warmth to a room, but it can be too neutral for south-facing rooms that don’t get much direct sunlight.

East (and west) facing rooms are more difficult to analyze because the light is less constant. In the morning, in rooms facing east, you have a soft and bright light that is a little warm. As the sun rises, the light brightens in east-facing rooms, and colors can look a bit dull at noon. In the afternoon, rooms with east-facing windows look a little grayer and darker. These spaces work best with warm colors. Cooler colors may look a little subdued in the afternoon.

Macadamia SW 6142 is a light medium neutral with a golden beige shade that doesn’t fade in the afternoon.

The Best Dark Paint Colors To Use For Your Home Interior

Creamy SW 7012 is one of the few off-white colors that can be kept in an east-facing room. It warms up the room without being too yellow.

Techno Gray SW 6170 is a warm greige. With just the tiniest hint of green, this color holds its warmth in the cool afternoon light of an east-facing room.

In the morning, west-facing rooms have less light. In the afternoon, the light gradually appears warmer and brighter, increasing in intensity towards the end of the day. West-facing rooms work well with cool and warm colors, but remember that afternoon sun brings out the strength and depth of warmer colors.

If you have windows on multiple walls, then you’re dealing with multiple exposures (yikes!). Consider which window lets in the most unobstructed light. In general, you should pay more attention to the dominant lighting in the room. The good news is that you have a little more flexibility when it comes to your personal color preferences.

The Best Paint Colors For Dark Rooms

A southwest-facing room has warm, bright light that becomes more intense in the afternoon, while a northeast-facing room has cool, gray light during the day. A room with south-east windows has a soft, warm glow during the day, bright in the mornings, a little dry at noon, with the intensity of the afternoon sun influenced by the eastern exposure. Northwest-facing rooms are cool and gray during the day, with only a little warm light in the afternoon.
