A Complete Guide To Painting Fireplace Brick (2023)
My sister really wondered through the chimney bricks. Honestly, it looks like a new fireplace.
He did an amazing job of painting the fireplace to give the entire living room a whole new feel. He used Benjamin Moore Arborcott White Solid Stain and highly recommends it to anyone considering a DIY fireplace makeover.
The reason ArborCoat worked for him was because his brick was porous and able to absorb paint.
Before any painting project, it’s always a good idea to start from scratch. You never know how much dirt and dust is on the brick.

Fireplaces can collect a lot of dirt and grime. Using a small wire brush is a great way to remove dirt from the entire surface of the brick.
Don’t worry about picking up every bit and dirt. Just make sure you tap really loose bits. You may need to make any ground repairs before starting.
You can use pure TSP on a cloth or soapy water. You can see how dirty the brick was after just cleaning it with soap and water.
First use a brush to paint the ground or ground line. You can use a roller or just a brush to continue painting the ends.

Continue painting until you have covered the entire chimney. Look at the surface of the brick from several angles.
Allow the paint to dry completely before applying another coat. This old set really spread the paint, so when she was done with the first coat, she could go back and start on another.
You can see how this historic brick fireplace was given a completely modern look with just a little paint. It really brightens up this room for a modern farmhouse feel and dramatic statement.
If you plan to use your fireplace, you must use special heat-resistant paint for the interior. As you can see, the inside of the fireplace is not painted here.
How To Paint A Fireplace
If we were doing this DIY painting project today, we would use Loxon Masonry Paint from Sharon Williams. My sister was very happy with the color choice. However, we think that the best color is the one intended for architectural surfaces.
This fireplace was built three years ago and looks exactly the same as when it was first started. You should remember that they rarely use the fireplace.
The good news is that you can paint with some masonry paint and primer. You can choose the color of your fireplace according to your style.
We do not recommend using regular dyes to dye your hair. While we’ve seen some DIY projects work well, we’ll still use paints that are designed for clay surfaces.

As I read your article, I found myself looking back to my early teaching days. I use task analysis every day. You were clear, complete and descriptive. We recently purchased a 60 year old home with a brick chimney that needed extensive repairs to the front and back. Unfortunately, mortar and pestle just don’t go together. My answer is white washing or DIY painting. Now I can expect a successful project, thanks.
Hello Donna. Thanks for the kind words. I am a former teacher, so this is a compliment to me! Painting your brick fireplace is easy and can completely transform your space. I love a white brick fireplace and this is probably one of my favorite fireplaces. Let me show you how to paint a brick fireplace and freshen up your space.
Simple Ways To Update Your Fireplace
We’ve lived in our current house for seven years, and since the day I moved in, actually the day we toured the house and wrote the proposal, I’ve wanted to paint the brick fireplace in the family room.
My husband will have nothing to do with it and will not even think of touching it, no matter how much I beg him. he was
, the kind of person. So for seven years I lived with the big elephant in the room always trying to decorate around it to brighten up the place. Now, don’t get me wrong…I love bricks and red/orange bricks have their place in the right setting; Not just my family room.
You can paint the bricks and many people paint the bricks inside out. It happens all the time. For this post, I discuss painting an interior gas fireplace. If you want to paint exterior brick or other brick, some of these tips will be the same, but I encourage you to consider painting the type of brick you need for your project.
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint On A Brick Fireplace
I love colored bricks, but it can take some maintenance and needs to be done carefully. Be sure to use breathable paint such as silicate or mineral paint.
You may hear the term whitewashed brick and think it is the same thing as painting brick. Not so; However, many people say whitewash when they mean paint.
Whitewash is an old technique used to lighten walls, fences or bricks, while painting is actually applying paint to something like a wall or brick. Lime is a mixture of chalk, lime and water and whitens the surface where it is applied, but does not leave a solid layer on the surface. White paint contains binders and resins, to create a solid surface, dry on a solid layer, protects and adds color to the applied surface.
White paint can also be used to whiten the surface by removing the white paint. These terms are often used interchangeably.
How To Patch & Paint A Brick Fireplace
I recommend a can of Zenser Primer as a primer for painting a brick fireplace. After using Zensor Primer, you can use any basic interior latex paint and get excellent coverage. I recommend one coat of primer and two coats of latex paint for the top coat.
Because of the paint I used, I didn’t need to apply a primer before painting. I applied two coats of paint and it looked good. Again, I checked with my color expert and this was their recommendation. Often, the higher the quality of the paint, the less top coat is needed. Higher quality paints tend to be more expensive, but I have found that investing a few dollars more in my paint ensures coverage and completion of my painting projects.
What paint to use on a brick fireplace? Any acrylic latex paint should be used in conjunction with a primer. I chose Benjamin Moore’s Aura Paint as recommended by the owner at our paint store. It is a smooth, harmonious color and works in few coats. It resists chipping and is holding primer and paint together so I didn’t need to prime first. I needed two coats all with this color.
The color finish or color gloss you choose is up to you. This is personal preference. I see many who use a semi-gloss finish because it is more durable and easier to clean. My husband and I don’t like a lot of shiny accents and having a brick wall with that kind of shiny finish didn’t appeal to us. We chose an indigo shell finish and using a high-end color really makes a difference here. The eggshell holds up well, although it is not shiny and is still easy to clean as needed.
How To Paint A Brick Or Stone Fireplace
I usually love a white brick fireplace and white painted brick. You can use any color you like for your decor, but painting the fireplace white will work best. I have seen black, gray, navy blue fireplaces and they look amazing. This is again personal preference.
Since all the decor in our house is white dew, I wanted everything to flow together and we chose Benjamin Moore White dew to paint the fireplace as well.
The design of the fireplace is beautiful and is truly a standout piece in the room, but the back painting makes this fireplace even more stunning. I love how the coat fits and so does everyone else
