Preparation is a very important part of doing exterior brick painting correctly. Remember to clean the bricks with a cleaning mixture before doing anything. If the brick is not heavily soiled, a hose, dry brush and soapy water work well.
Before & After: Our House’s Exterior
After cleaning, make sure and fill all cracks with acrylic sealant. This requires drying time before applying the exterior paint. Now you should be sure and cover all windows and doors with plastic. If necessary, use multiple layers and masking tape to hold it tight.
As with any other job, the right tools make the job smoother and easier. You want to make sure you have a sprayer or roller that can cover a large area at once. We recommend using a spray. This shortens the work time, facilitates the entry of all joints and is completely convenient. But be sure to spray all the corners to make sure the paint gets into the nooks and crannies of the brick. This is especially important if you have many members like our house.
If you’re using a sprayer, you’ll need a brush for drippy or hard-to-reach areas within reach. Always remember that before applying the second or third coat, you should be sure and let the paint dry for about 4-6 hours.
We own a Graco Magnum and absolutely love it. If you’re going to do a DIY painting project like this, a good spray paint is essential.

I don’t think it takes much to see this, but before you start painting, consider the weather. Too cold or too hot are not ideal conditions for painting bricks. Windy and rainy weather may not work.
Make sure and check your forecast for a few days of good temperatures and good working conditions. This makes it much better for the painter and the paint adheres much better to the surface.
We painted brick on a DIY in a previous house, but decided to hire one to do it this time. No, because it’s hard, we don’t have time yet. But I admit we spend a lot of money on it! When I write the check, I’m sure I’ll reconsider our decision on this matter. But because of our high altitude and hard-to-reach places, it is very difficult for us to accomplish this task.

Although at first I didn’t know if we made the right decision, it was one of the best things we did during the entire build. It gives our home character and a unique yet timeless character.
This is one area where we spent extra because we didn’t do this project as part of the build. It was money well spent. Because of the size of our house, I feel like the painting would be drowned out. I recommend that you estimate the size of your house and your time and budget before deciding whether or not to undertake this project.
