Today I’m sharing my thoughts on how we love our cinder block, what we’ve learned, and how we seal our cinder block countertops. Perhaps this information will be useful if you decide to go down this road one day, or if you already have blocks, but have not confirmed them yet. But we’ve learned along the way that just oil going into the wood won’t help us. I wanted to seal the counter with something that makes the surface waterproof.

Living with my owner for a while made me want to waterproof it for a few reasons:

There are many options out there. We treated our counters with wood oil for months – we used the wood oil recommended by the dealer, and we used the recommended method. After installation, we use the oil daily (YES!), then weekly, then weekly, then monthly, then six months later. It required a lot of care and it was a lot of work!

Although oil would bring out the color and shine of the wood and allow you to directly interact with the heat and texture of the wood, I wouldn’t like it!

So we ended up following one of my friend’s suggestions: the method he used to seal the blocky counter in his bathroom.

I want to say that this is the way we prevent water, and this is not the only way to do it!

I know there are MANY OTHER OPTIONS out there, so make sure you do your research first! This process worked for us, and I’d love to hear how it works for you if you’re going to try this method.

So the first thing we did was sand the counters down until they were clean! We used a Ryobi sander.

The stain could waterproof the surface on its own and give our counter a nice finish, but based on my friend’s suggestion, the stain wouldn’t be enough.

It’s a liquid that dries on plastic film and is great for sealing on the counter, but now there’s a layer of plastic between you and your beautiful new wood.

We went for a quick drying product, so shortly after the first coat dries, we can reapply the second coat.

The result was wonderful. I love that I can spread anything on my counter without worrying about it now. They were simple, small steps that we have to do in the long run.

This morning I went out to try to do some sprints in my driveway with my friends. I must have been drunk when I decided it was a good idea. Anyway, I’ve given you a little kitchen detail here and there. It’s not finished yet, but today I wanted to share my cabinet and countertop makeover with you. If you remember, we started with cabinets and counters like this one…

You can see by the lines that the cabinets are the same, but painted. I wanted to share today how I did it. I wanted to keep the process simple and I wanted to use a durable paint that wouldn’t require layer upon layer. I chose to use Rockler’s General Finishes Milk Paint in Coastal Blue (if you remember, I made this decision when I was painting this board the same color!). This paint is very durable and goes on well. It’s basically acrylic paint made to look like old latte paint.

To fix my cabinets, I took out the doors and removed all the hinges. I opened the doors and slammed them lightly. The bases stayed put and I used deglosser on them so I didn’t have to mess up at home. The paint adheres very well to sanded and polished surfaces without the need for priming. And it only took me TWO coats! I looked great after just two coats. But since I have two dogs, two children and a husband, I decided to destroy the cabinets a little, so that if they are mistreated, I won’t have so much trouble. I used 220 grit sandpaper to sand a little. As a final step, to protect the paint, I applied satin Minwax Wipe-on Poly (my choice).

And about a week later I was glad I decided to bother them a little. Why not the children, not the dogs, not the husband but I dropped something heavy and it hit the cupboards and made a little noise. But you know what? NO PAINTING. The cabinet was a little damaged, but the paint was well preserved! That, my friends, is quality paint!

The bottom drawer had a small chip in the corner from the day we moved. I decided to accept that weakness and worry about it a bit. 🙂 You can also read where I found glassware at a great price here.

You will also notice that the cameras have changed! WOOOOO!!! Hello mustard yellow ant, hello Ikea butcher! My amazing neighbor helped me because we had a leaky left corner space and we weren’t sure we could handle it. He installed them along with our new sink. Here you can see the rough area in front of the hole where Travis had to cut the piece to fit. He cut the small dots to fit together like a puzzle. Pretty smart, huh?

And behind the sink you can see how the corners meet – I love that! I like this look more than if they met perpendicularly. Anakin admits, he’s camera shy today.

Here’s a look at the new sink and faucet…I haven’t done anything fancy here yet…budget people! But I had a pipe with separate hot and cold…I prefer that. Chris prefers it another way, but we agreed that I would use it more.

You can see that we have already stocked our sink with dish soap, paper towels, Anakin, and a cute teaching plant from Emmy for my volunteer work this year! What can I say? We live here with our frogs!
