The number one painting question I’ve gotten over the years is about choosing exterior paint colors because it’s one of the hardest painting decisions you can make for your home. You want your home to have a nice curb appeal and you don’t want to make color mistakes. If you follow my seven steps below, I promise you’ll avoid common mistakes and make great exterior color decisions! Join me in this!

What Are The Best Exterior Paint Colors To Sell A House?

The first thing to do when deciding what color to paint the exterior of your house is to choose a color shade. When I say “shade”, do you want a light, medium or dark color in your home? At this point, there is nothing to think about other than deciding whether you want a light or white color, medium or medium shade, or whether you want a dark color.

For most of you, choosing a shade is an easy decision right away, and you’ll know right away if you want a lighter or darker home. However, some of you may be unsure, open to all the nuances, and need a little help making that decision. It can help if you search Pinterest for patios for inspiration to determine the best shade for your home. For example, if you have a ranch style, search for “ranch style exterior” on Pinterest to see all the different color options that inspire you.

Before you go any further in deciding on your color, you should consider the color of your roof. If you have black or neutral gray, you don’t have to worry about the color clashing. Unfortunately, I have a dark brown roof with slight red undertones, so colors like green or blue wouldn’t work for me and would clash. For those of you who have a roof with red, brown, green or blue gray shingles, you should definitely consider the color of the roof when choosing an exterior color palette.

If you’re like me and have a dark brown roof with red highlighted shingles, you’ll want to keep the main color neutral to keep your home safe. If you have tiles with green, blue or gray undertones, you have a little more freedom and choosing a neutral or light color will prevent the colors from clashing.
