Introduction to the story by Kazuo Ishiguro: A meeting of three old friends from college, one of whom has his own money to pay for an April funeral in Paris. A room filled with lush strings, blue horns and Sarah Vaughan singing “Man’s Love”. I love Sarah Vaughan’s voice. His Mahmal songs and beautiful songs that fill the air in the dark hours of the day are some of the most memorable moments in a student’s life. Songs of longing and regret, songs of love, joy and loneliness. The beginning of Kazuo Ishiguro’s story – meeting three old friends from college, one of whom has hidden feelings to confront and fight for control over everything Sarah Vaughan’s voice sings through dialogue – immediately made me laugh with joy, took me back to just in time. Opening the pages I thought about starting a nostalgic story, maybe I remembered some memories of unwanted love, or slowness, courage and fear of a slow heart, revolution, emotions revealed by the author’s self-control as for the rest of the day. Instead of what I was thinking, I soon started laughing in my stomach, worrying about the boy’s son’s sleepy Sunday morning, watching with a sarcastic laugh some of the empty, inexplicable actions of the three full-blooded characters. The second lesson was read, but it revealed some hidden emotions and subtleties of humor. Will we ever get to know each other? Do old friends know us less? Loneliness, the ambiguity of friendship, sacrifice, the meaning of what could have been, the burden of almost spontaneous decisions, the sadness and regret that seem so natural to the human condition are miraculously forgotten when you connect this piece of life from the lyrics of a Ray Charles song that tells a story. We were particularly impressed to see songs – like Ray Charles singing “Come Rain or Come” – in which the words themselves were joyful, but the meaning was heartfelt. I didn’t know this fascinating story was part of Ishiguro’s Nocturnes: Five Stories of Night Music, now I really want to read the other stories behind the title – and listen to Sarah Vaughan at night too. Better to regret than forget. … a lot of

I love Ishiguro and his “absurd”, out of this world story. It looks like the “normal” story of a friend visiting a couple in England. But soon you think … “what … what’s going on”? How will it end? This is what I love about Ishiguro: surprise, birth, weirdness. Yes, I have read Ishiguro this year and I hope he will release a new book soon! Four stars and recommended. For several days I struggled to read any books, maybe the Satantang hangover was still there and taking its toll in my mind. Today I picked up this book myself and on some pages I felt that it had nothing to do with history, perhaps a terrible sentence, but Satantang’s poetry still reminds me of so many new memories that it was difficult for me to find time for them. However, after skimming through a few pages, it has turned into something as laid back as jazz – taking you slowly, like old wine – and I actually finished this little beauty in just over an hour. This was the first time I lived in the world of Kazuo Ishiguro, and this world built on human relationships based on memory, loss, regret and ambiguity has completely taken over my mind. The scene begins with the narrator imagining three old college colleagues meeting, one of whom is himself. Pandora’s Box spoke of unrequited love, achievement, stress and obsession and created a world of fun, challenges and countless people competing with each other to save their world. One of them was amicably protected and, surprisingly, did nothing so that his friend could see the sun. The sounds of jazz brought him back memories of the old days, but while dancing with his friend’s wife and his old friend, he tried not to reveal what this soul soup might involve, but his heart was broken and these quiet feelings found their own. Road to Tears The author used the scary story so cleverly that he stepped back and let the reader make up his mind instead of endlessly stuffing innumerable ideas. However, this did not affect the fluency of speech, because it is slow but pleasant, like jazz. This story also goes through a pot and a bowl of well-wound ropes and beautiful words that hide the adversities of life. The story was steeped in a dry humor that required the discerning reader to find in it deep human feelings hidden in the obvious mockery of life; where people find the loneliness of existence thickened by distrust and doubts that destroy interpersonal relationships.
