The Gaineses, in partnership with Kilz, recently held a presentation in New York City focused on paint, color and home refreshment, and Curbed was there to hear it.
When it comes to taking risks with paint colors in the home, Joanna Gaines says the only room she can afford to use is the dining room. That’s because dining rooms often get more light, which can add color, than bathrooms, which tend to be narrower and like to experiment with boldly colored fixtures and accessories.
Asked specifically about purple — which happens to be Pantone’s new color of the year — Gaines admits it’s a “difficult” color for her, reminiscent of Disney princesses. However, she advises choosing a non-essential room to experiment with – like the laundry room – or start by painting the furniture.
Joanna Gaines says she goes “back and forth” on accent walls. As he says, “If you get it right, it’s not a standout wall.”

Creating an accent wall may seem like a no-brainer, but do it for a good reason.
