If you are new to the world of painting, the variety of paint brands, colors and types can be overwhelming. Here I share what my favorite acrylic paint for beginners is and why.
I’ll share how I made it as simple as possible and make it easy for you to refer to when you want to fix a color for a particular painting.
Color Mixing Chart Six Printable Pages For Learning About Colors
Start by making a grid on paper. I use the Canson Mix Media Pad. I made a grid with a ruler and pencil.
This mixed media pad is available in multiple sizes to find the right fit for you. I have a bigger one that probably works better for this, but it’s loaded.
I like large squares so you can see the colors, but you can make the squares smaller so they fit more on a page.
Select the first color to blend. I started with the gorgeous Ultramarine from the Plaid Folk Art Set

A small puddle of bright ultramarine blue and remove any color you may have mixed with it. In this case, I mixed medium gray.
You can use a palette knife or a combination of brushes. Here I show you how to mix with a palette knife. (I also share how I brush the mixture at the end)
Using a flat paint brush, blend the colors in the top box. Use a brush that’s a size that’s comfortable for you. In this case, I used #10 straight from this brush set.
Then add more gray paint to the previous mixture. Brush the new mixture over the bottom square again.

Sometimes you get to a point where you don’t see much color change, at which point I might start adding white to see what happens from there.
If you see my blur brush above, I used a brush to blend the white, but you can use a palette knife if you prefer.
You can do this with each color in the set to see if you can mix it easily. If you look at the photos, you can see the beautiful terracotta that was made, some beautiful sage green varieties, and deep purple colors.
But there are a few paint colors you might want to add to your collection that are my “go to” colors and they are Burnt Amber and Yellow Ocher.

Creating a color mixing chart is a way for artists to learn how colors interact with each other. These can be used by those who work with watercolors, acrylics, oil paints and any other medium in which you can mix colors. This is the best way to learn more about color. It also creates a color mixing guide for later reference.
When creating a color mixing chart, you can mix each color with other colors. Doing this exercise will allow you to mix many colors that you may not have thought to combine before. So it’s a great way to discover great new color combinations and understand how colors work together!
Creating a color chart can also help you feel more confident when mixing colors for a painting. Often people know what colors they want, but don’t know how to mix them. But if you have already gone through the process of mixing all your colors. Then you will have a better idea of how to get the color with the colors you need.
Gouache Mixing Charts
You can create a color mixing chart with as few or as many colors as you like. Note that if you create a color chart by mixing 24 colors, you will mix 576 squares! Good grief! The color chart below only has 7 colors as they are a good starting point with the colors I use most often.
To make the chart above, I took 9 x 12 pieces of watercolor paper. When I made this color chart with watercolors. If you painted the color chart with acrylic or gouache, you can also use watercolor paper. Technically, you can use watercolor paper for an oil color mixing chart. Not an archive though. If you want your oil color mixing chart to last longer, use primed canvas or primed heavy paper.
Take your ruler and measure your color chart so you have one square inch of space for each area. I also left an inch of space from the edges to the side and top edges where I marked the color names. I make my squares one inch each, but you can make the boxes as small or large as you like!
Label each box in the left and top margins. You will label each side in the same order in the same color – as you can see in the example image below.

Next, paint the colored dots next to each color name as shown in the image below. This is a reminder of what the color looks like next to the color name.
We started by coloring the squares of the color chart with their corresponding colors in a diagonal line. So the first box is filled with cadmium yellow, the square next to it is filled with cadmium red, and so on.
Now comes the fun part of creating the color chart. You can actually start mixing colors! When the upper edge is at its cadmium red point and up to ultramine blue, you will then mix cadmium red and ultramine blue.
You will do this for each color. However, you will find that you make two sets for each color combination. So every time you mix Cadmium + Ocean Blue, you mix it a second time on the other side of the diagonal line.

If you are wondering how much of each color to mix, you will always do 50% of each color. So when you mix ultramine blue + cadmium yellow, you mix 50% cadmium yellow + 50% ultramine blue. This path is a mixture of the same color.
Because it makes no sense to mix the same color twice in the same way. First you will mix the lighter color and then second time you will mix the darker color. Look at the image below and see how the color chart shows that the left side is lighter and the right side is darker.
In addition, you will find the main color three times. Once horizontal with the top row of the first square. Once vertically along the first left row of squares, then diagonally down and down the center. For clarity, when I say primary color, I mean the color you typed in.
A Guide To Mixing Colors
You will set these colors to three different values. The leftmost base color will have the lightest value. In the middle, their diagonal line will have an average value. Then the color along the top edge will be the darkest value. This section on creating color tables will really help you understand tone values and how to create them.
The color mixing chart used in this article was created with watercolors. But no matter which tool you use, the principle is the same. Be it acrylic, oil, gouache or whatever!
When mixing lighter colors with watercolors, you will use less pigment and more water. However, when mixing a color chart with oil, acrylic, or gouache, you’ll use white to make your colors pop.
Now all that’s left to do is go ahead and mix all the colors for your color chart!
