Come Rain Come Shine Jan Karon

Jan Caron, born Janice Meredith Wilson in the hills of North Carolina, was named after the title of the popular Janice Meredith novel.

Jan wrote her first novel at the age of ten. “The manuscript was written on Blue Horse notebook paper and was hidden from my sister for good reason. When she found it, she discovered with a pounding heart the only curse word I had included in anyone’s speech. For Pete’s sake, didn’t Rhett Butler use the same word and mess it up? After some very direct instruction from my grandmother, I’ve been writing books ever since to avoid getting caught.”

A few years ago, Caron left a successful career in advertising to live in the mountain village of Blowing Rock, North Carolina, and write books. “I took a leap of faith to follow my lifelong dream of becoming a writer,” she says. “I made real sacrifices and took big risks. But life, it seems to me, is primarily about risk.”

Enthusiastic booksellers across the country have introduced Caron’s moving books to readers of all ages. At Home in Mitford, Caron’s first book in the Mitford series, was nominated for an ABBY by the American Booksellers Association in 1996 and again in 1997. In Come Rain or Come Shine, Ian Caron moves Father Timothy Kavanagh’s Mitford story to the next generation: his adopted son Dooley, who is about to marry his old sweetheart, Lace Harper.

It should be a small, low-key celebration at Meadowgate Farm, where guests will cook a hearty dinner and Dooley’s best friend, Tommy, will start the music; his band, the Ham Biscuits, and Lace’s best friend, Beth.

Fans of Tim’s dad don’t have to worry about getting lost in all the wedding noise. That’s a big part of this novel, the 13th in Mitford Caron’s bestselling series. Likewise, Cynthia’s wife, Harley’s neighbor and friend, the Dooley brothers, and other characters beloved by readers.

As the story opens, Father Tim is helping Dooley repair a broken cattle fence at Meadowgate, the novel’s setting. Dooley gave the tools to work with, he muses: “He asked for a more difficult retreat, and here he was in flying colors. On the other hand, it was the most fun he had as a coon. Not everyone sees how a young couple builds a new life.”

Before “The Big Knot”, as Harley calls him, comes Dooley’s graduation from veterinary school and the opening of his veterinary practice, bought along with mentor Hal Owen’s farm with Dooley’s inheritance from Miss Sadie Baxter.

The group will be joined by Choo-Choo the bull, whose unpredictable reputation has him wary, and possibly the mysterious Jack Tyler, who often appears in Dooley and Lace’s thoughts and prayers.

The days leading up to the wedding are full of throwing things off the to-do list and dealing with the panic that sometimes surfaces.

Take for example a pot that causes problems with too many fried eggs and fried chicken. Listening to the Potluck planners, father Tim thinks, “Potluck Paranoia was definitely in stock. It outdid the dress and quickly ran into second place behind Weather Anxiety.”

Even father Tim is not immune. “Now he understood why brides were often mad, mothers hysterical, and fathers hiding in the tall grass.”

Karon, who lives in Charlottesville, also lets us hide in the tall grass. Through different points of view, she shows us what everyone thinks, prays and, in Lace’s case, writes in her diary.

As in Mitford’s earlier novels, Caron offers his readers another chance to escape, if only for a while, from their own world and live in a city that “takes care of itself”.

Her readers say they wish Mitford existed so they could walk there, and “Come Rain or Come Shine” will only add to their longing for such a safe place.

Will they like this book? As Father Tim says, when someone asks how the wedding preparations are going, “check it out.”

In fact, it’s one of the first reasons bestselling author Jan Caron mentions when asked why she spends more time here.
