Dark Brown Exterior Paint Colors – After we decided to paint our 1915 Dutch Colonial dark gray with cream white trim, I couldn’t find many examples on Pinterest or Instagram. I had a vision but nothing to back it up.
Most brown houses are light gray, tan, or brown in color. Some other cedar teeth are stained. But there were few examples of dark brown houses, let alone Dutch colonies.

How To Choose The Right Exterior Paint Colors
Once we settled on a general color scheme, I pulled out suit tokens and cards from various stores. Wherever there were bits of color, I picked the ones that caught my eye.
When I felt satiated, I sat with all the colors in natural light. Some were immediately rejected. Some of the chips looked purple, brown and green. The first colors I removed were:
After the first round of eliminations, I narrowed it down to “definitely dark brown” colors.
In retrospect, I should have passed up the Black Mocha in the early rounds. But this was one of the first colors I pulled out and wanted to see if it would work. But let me be clear: black mocha is black, not brown.

Anyway! Here are the final five items I considered for a home. All these colors are very beautiful, dark, rich, somewhat muted gray:
I’ve ranked the last five from darkest (black mocha) to lightest (star anise). Even though I love all five of the top colors, I can only pick one. The three dark colors (Black Mocha, French Roast, and Espresso Beans) were just too dark for us. So they got an instant boot.
Since Pat liked the two lighters (star anise) and I would have made our house as black as my soul if it hadn’t been awful, we struck a deal.
We’re not suggesting that you stick to a set method for choosing house paint, but the steps we’ve taken can help you decide. We did things by process of elimination:

Mohit surprised me. When I had all the chips, I didn’t really care. Although I didn’t know it would be my final color, it has all the qualities I wanted: dark, gray and not too saturated.
Finally: I used the C2 Paint Enamored chip and sampled this paint at Home Depot. I know that color matching can happen and is generally not recommended, but I was happy with the swatch and excited to see the color change.
