Desk To Match Billy Bookcase – A few weeks ago I was watching a movie in the basement with my husband when I looked up and saw the world’s worst tape on the ceiling. I’m talking about the duct tape that covers the seam in the drywall, which is then covered with a putty knife.
Normally, spotlights illuminate the room, but since we were watching a movie, we only had the lights on. The light of the lamp emphasized how terrible the stitching was. I think I’m a better judge of poutine quality because I’ve made everything in the first place. The tape stuck out like a sore thumb. It was maybe only 4 feet long, but it was pretty badass.

We definitely finished the basement 25 years ago and you’d think it would hurt me sooner.

But now is the right time. When the weather warms up, I’d rather be out and about than paint my basement when we get out after quarantine. It might have something to show for being locked up and overdue for painting the entire basement.
The problem with painting a ceiling is that you have to finish the walls and trim, especially if you don’t have the same color as the ceiling.
So while you’re reading this, I’ve finished fixing the ceiling, painting the ceiling, and covering the walls. This messy job above was really done on purpose so I could make sure I got the ceiling color in the corner and now I could make a clean paint line with the wall color.
So I can paint and paint and come up with projects that I want to do on the go, one of which is this kids desk from at least 15 years ago, if not more. It was a playground in my basement. At one end of the toy room we had several colorful milk cartons. One day I got bored with the chest and switched to a bookcase and desk combination. The goal was to have plenty of storage and space that could grow with the kids.
A Compact Home Workspace Keeping Everything In Check
I still like the functionality of the space, but I want to make the area a little more scavenger chic. Before I change it, I wanted to show you the basic construction, because it can give you an idea of what you can do with your space.
Here’s my IKEA hack of four billy bookcases with plywood sandwiched between them to use as a craft table. Billy bookshelves have been sold at IKEA since 1979. They are currently available in white, black/brown and birch. This gray color is no longer available.
I have been using this area as my office since my husband moved me out of our office so he could work there. I actually volunteered because he needed to have a closing door for unlimited zoom calls and he had a real job. After 6 months, he grew tired of the makeshift office we set up for him in a spare bedroom.
When we installed the billy bookshelves, we had to cut the length down an inch to fit under the wall with the pipes.
Ways To Hack Built In Bookshelves
Each box is labeled so the kids and I can see what’s inside without opening each box.
These green and white containers were also from IKEA, but have been discontinued. They have stencils, stamps, stickers, construction paper, beads, glitter, sequins, scissors, glue…you get the idea. As the kids got older, their art supplies were replaced by my art supplies. Bottles of Elmer’s glue and glue sticks have now become ModPodge and wood glue. Construction paper is now scrapbook paper. Safety scissors for children are now fabric and specialty scissors.
Even though my youngest is 22, the outer shelves are still full of children’s toys. Matchbox cars, blocks, Legos, (Mr.) Potato Head, people, babies, dinosaurs, dolls… I have it all.
I recently found out that they are actually Legos and not Legos. Who knew? I have been saying it wrong for years and now Mr. A potato head is just a potato head, I’m pretty sure we had Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head. I’m sure I’ll keep calling both these toys by the wrong name.

The table is a 5′ 10″ x 2′ 6″ piece of one-inch plywood, the same color as the shelves.
It may be a few weeks, but the next time you see this part of the kids’ table, it will (hopefully) have transformed. I’m ready to start debugging.

This works well for now as I don’t have room for a large workstation. It also provides storage for my documents and files.
The table section slides out after lowering. It’s just a full size billy rack. Make a cut about 2 cm wide to clear the gap when the door is open.
Cut 2 cm from the back of one of the existing shelves. (This gives space to close the door when the table is folded). Secure the shelf in place using L brackets.
Use friction hinges (around £15 a pair) which support the table in an upright or folded position and allow it to open and close easily.

I’ll be 100% honest and say this was the hardest DIY I’ve ever done. Basically I was doing all this myself. I think this project would be much easier if you had a helping hand. That’s why I rushed to do it, I didn’t want to wait for someone to come and help me, so keep this in mind if you’re planning this project yourself.
To say I’m happy with how this turned out would be an understatement….I’m excited! I was very happy to see the price. I picked this up for under $200, which is a win in my book! I’m going to share with you how I achieved the built-in look with these Ikea bookshelves, but if you’re looking for more tutorials on how to achieve this look, check out this post from Lauren’s Blaser House. Way to get a built-in look with these bookshelves. I got a lot of ideas from his post.
So, that’s all you need to know about how to get built-in looks with prefab libraries.
The first thing I did was measure. The only information you need to start this project is how much material you need to know how big the space you are working with is. After I finished my measurements, I stopped using my float table size based on all my other measurements. I wanted a slightly larger floating desk to fit my iMac, so I worked with a floating desk that was 16 inches deep and 40 inches deep. So, after figuring out the size of my floating table, I figured out how much I needed for other materials. Throughout the post I will list the sizes I received on all materials.
Office Makeover Reveal
It was very easy. It took me 45 minutes to compile both these libraries. I think I am
