Does Home Depot Sell Chalk Paint – Hi, I can. Remember that $50 Craigslist cabinet you found last month for your TV stand project? Remember how I said I was going to destroy it?
My first attempt at painting a wardrobe failed. I spent two weeks on this thing, peeling it, painting it, hating it, painting it three different colors and finally saving it with another coat of chalk paint.

So I came up with a million ways to tell this story, most of which left out 99% of it, but in the end I decided to tell it all.
Ikea Coffee Table Upgrade — Jessica Rayome
Let’s go back to the beginning. I cleaned up our living room and got busy finding a cabinet the right size for the TV. I tend to work on a budget, so I’ve always tried to make the most of what I own.
When we first moved in, we had a very old TV and an antique chest of drawers (which ended up in the corner of the hall). It was the most interesting reflection, and strangely enough I still look back on that period as a wonderful one.
Then Kevin was introduced. It was the worst outfit in the store and no matter how hard I tried… it just wouldn’t work.
So, during the 3 month period I lived in Panera while the floors were being installed, I spent a lot of time looking for better ones at thrift stores and Craigslist.

I was just interested in the shape and size and wanted to see beyond the orange color of the wood.
So Jesse brought it home and I put it in the little spare room in the bedroom. Because even though it doesn’t make sense, I’ve been freeing up that room and using it as my project room lately.
And this is where the story gets weird. My original plan was to strip the cabinet and use a combination of walnut stain and whitewash to create a hardware restoration.
I removed the cabinet and then didn’t paint at all. After I took it off, I didn’t realize that the top and sides of the cabinet were pressed wood veneer, and no matter how hard I tried (even with several different products), the pressed wood wouldn’t penetrate. the place is right.

Although the painting process was a complete failure, the removal process was a success. Since I get so many questions about furniture removal, I thought it might be good to add a little about my first-hand experience.
First I chose to use Citristrip gel remover and mineral spirits because they are almost odorless and safe to use indoors (even if you still want to open the window). The only other supplies I needed were a plastic cloth (to catch any swept up dirt), a plastic scraper, scouring pads, rubber gloves (made for cleaning furniture) and mineral spirits.
I took all the drawers out of the closet, poured some Citristrip into a metal bucket (you can get it at Home Depot for $2) and just used a brush to apply the gel to the surface of the drawers and cabinet frame. .
I left the gel on for about 30 minutes and after I saw it break I started scraping off the rest with a plastic scraper. I was surprised how easily it came off.

It easily removed all the polyurethane and even most of the stains left on this 50 year old cabinet.
Since this cabinet has a lot of nicks and rough spots, I used a scouring pad (and an old toothbrush) to remove any residue.
I then wiped down the entire cabinet with mineral spirits (to remove any chemical residue) and then lightly sanded everything with 320 grit sandpaper.
I then added wood conditioner and then tried painting just the top, but when that didn’t work I quickly scraped it off. Then I realized that this is not a total waste, because untreated wooden surfaces are perfect for painting. The glass is half full.
Diy Chalk Paint: A First Attempt
So when I was browsing the paint section at Home Depot trying to pick a color for my cabinets, I came across a new chalk paint. I’ve painted a lot of furniture with chalk paint (including my favorite dresser), but I’ve always made my own with plaster (recipe here in tip #6).
Mostly because I’m so cheap and I can’t bring myself to pay $50 for a celebrity look (but I hear it’s amazing, so don’t rebel.)
So when I saw this at Home Depot I was curious to try it out.
Here’s the point of the story: “Stand up in shame,” but my heart says, “Go ahead, girl.”

So I spent 3 hours painting the cabinet black. It seemed like a really cool idea at the time. But that was definitely not the case.
It looked like a big painting and I didn’t feel it in the living room.
I moved my workstation into the living room itself to get a better idea of how it would look.
Honestly, I thought the dresser looked good in this color, but there were times of the day when it looked like a big purple stain on the living room wall.

I also tried painting the original hardware with the petroleum nitrite bronze I used here and it made it look very bulky and dated.
As you can imagine, at this point I wanted nothing more than to have a bonfire party. And invite everyone.
Now I know that painting a piece of furniture white isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but I looked through a bunch of pictures for inspiration and found some white pieces of furniture that gave me hope.
I used a small pot of white American chalk paint called “Eternity”. (*Update: You can also find it at Home Depot here .) The best thing about this material is that you don’t have to sand or strip or even sand the furniture. You can paint anything, it sticks like glue. Obviously I went the very odd route of stripping the cabinet and repainting it several times. But let me repeat: all you have to do with this material is paint it on any piece of furniture, even if it has a glossy finish.

And to finish, I chose to use Creme Wax. Just wipe it down with a lint-free cloth, let it dry, and then polish it to your desired shine. Wax paint is really one of my favorites and looks very professional and smooth. I really liked the Americana wax and would definitely use it again. Plus, a little $9 wax really goes a long way. I used 1/3 of it all over the wardrobe. I painted the entire cabinet with a pot of paint.
As for the hardware, I decided to turn the kitchen cabinet hardware into a mirror and it brought everything together in the living room.
Also, since the cabinet was really old and smelled mostly of 1960s cigarettes, I vacuumed the drawers, then painted the inside and outside of each drawer with some Kilz primer (to trap the smoke smell) and then applied. our remaining wall paint to cover the drawers. (You may remember that I made this with green paint a few years ago.) It was very cute…white on the outside, a little off-white on the inside.
Bottom line, my wardrobe feels brand new now and I want to get the last two weeks out of my head.

Although the Jumbotron is still in the bedroom (where we live), for the first time since February I went out into the living room, tuned in to the small TV and lazed over the very addictive new season all day. A Netflix show.
Even though this dress up project was absolutely terrifying, I’m so glad I kept trying until I got it right. I learn a lot from trying new things, and any mistakes along the way are usually the best teachers.
If you told me I was in the pit of despair, I would use some words from an adult.
I’ll be back soon to share the living room (I’m so excited!!) and finally be able to share all the lighting I chose for the main area!

Before I go, here’s a quick look at the new kitchen light that I’m totally in love with. Finally, I ditched the old Craigslist chandelier and installed a generous Hudson Valley Hampton semi-flash polished nickel light from National.
