One of the most important requests we receive from clients looking to remodel their home is to choose the perfect paint color. We know there are many options to choose from and many factors that determine whether or not a color will work in a particular space.
Dorian Grey Sherwin Williams Cabinets
It’s no secret that we tend to gravitate towards neutrals. We like the warmth of a perfect greige or the depth of a dark anthracite. But we both love the subtlety of the colors and the boldness of the marine wall. We’ve rounded up some of our favorite paint colors from Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore, including a long list of other options if you’re looking to change up your space!
Mindful Gray Sw 7016
In our recent kitchen remodel, we used BM HC-168 Chelsea Gray on the island and SW 7017 Dorian Gray on the plinths. Darker colored or speckled island accents add visual interest and depth to the space!
We love the BM 2129-30 Blue Note. It’s the perfect muted navy – not too dark, not too light, just enough gray not to be too bright, but still stand out as a great color. Here’s a tip for using dark, bold colors: make sure your room gets enough natural light and accent pieces are light and airy so the room doesn’t feel too heavy.
When we installed this herringbone partition for our client, we chose a medium gray color. We love how SW 7019 Gauntlet Gray adds drama to this feature wall and how it complements the wall color, SW 7043 Worldly Grey. Another great option, and a very similar color, is the BM HC-172 Revere Pewter.
The subtle shades of blue and green tones are some of our favorites when we have clients who want a pop of color but still want to keep the palette neutral. This client’s female office using SW 7057 Silver Strand is a perfect example. Its slightly bluish, green color is still grey. We also like SW 6204 Sea Salt, which has even more colors.
Dorian Gray Kitchen Cabinets & Island
When we helped this client design a Bourbon-themed basement, we chose SW 7048 Urban Bronze for the ceiling to add drama and playfulness to the rustic vibe he was looking for. And since we know you’re wondering, we used SW 7031 Mega Greige on the walls, one of my favorites!
While we love clean, bright, white decor, there’s no denying what dramatic accents like this bookcase can do to a space. When we remodeled this client’s bedroom, we chose SW 7674 Peppercorn to showcase the unique construction.
SW 7015 Repose Gray is one of the most used, sought after and recognized grays in our tool kit. Clean, timeless and a safe choice if you want a solid neutral. It’s light and shiny and reflects a lot of light, but stands out beautifully against the glossy white trim.
Now that we’ve covered some of our favorite paint colors, let’s talk about some tips to help you choose the right color and finish! When choosing a color for your space, paint a large poster board and hang it for a day or two so you can see how the color changes under different lights and at different times of the day.

In most situations, we recommend flat or satin to all of our customers. They not only minimize the amount of light reflected from the wall surface, but also help hide imperfections in the wall. For cutting, semi-gloss is generally best for durability.
