Do you know how to calculate your due date? Establishing an exact due date, also known as your estimated custody date or EDC, is very important.
Due Date Based On How Many Weeks
If the first day of your last period is correct, you can calculate your due date by subtracting three months and adding seven days to the first day of your last period.

Your provider will determine your due date as accurately as possible during your pregnancy. Your estimated incarceration date* affects the timing and accuracy of many medical tests. This affects many medical decisions throughout your pregnancy.
* Estimated due date is a clinical term used to define your due date. This is often referred to as your EDC.
Below is a list of testing and treatment decisions that may be affected based on your EDC:
To calculate your estimated due date (EDC), you will be asked for detailed information about your menstrual cycle.
Your Baby’s Due Date Is September 15
If the decision is made to use your due date based on your LMP, your provider will ask for the first day of your last period to make sure you are sure of that date.
Example: If you are 10 weeks pregnant based on your LMP and the test at your first prenatal visit indicates that you are 16 weeks, you will have an ultrasound to determine your due date. This is because your due date will be very different than your clinical exam based on your menstrual cycle.
What questions will I be asked about my period? 1) What is the first day of your last menstrual period (LMP)?
This determines when you ovulate if you have a regular, 28-day menstrual cycle. During ovulation, the egg is released from the ovarian follicle.

4. Did your last period (menstruation) start on the correct day and last the usual number of days?
It will help to determine how reliable your period is by determining the date of your period. If you have a very regular 28 day cycle this is your average regular ovulation.
When menstruation starts (menarche) and when it ends (menopause) can be irregular. This information will help you determine how accurate your last period is.
7. Did you take any home pregnancy tests before this visit? If so, what date did you test positive?

Infertility is usually associated with irregular periods, delayed ovulation and ovulation (no ovulation). If you are pregnant without fertility treatment, this information may be helpful.
11. Did you take birth control pills or any other hormonal contraceptives during pregnancy?
An ultrasound performed below 12 weeks of pregnancy provides the most accurate information for calculating your due date. Because the ultrasonographer can see the changes in a short time.
On the contrary, ultrasound performed in the third trimester of pregnancy is not very accurate because the fetus is fully developed and the imaging changes are very short.
Having A Baby
First trimester ultrasounds are more accurate in calculating your due date because individual ultrasound results occur every few days.
Specific first trimester ultrasound findings are listed below. They provide information on dating and fetal well-being:
The gestational sac appears in the fourth week of pregnancy. However, it is not unusual to appear between 5 and 6 weeks.
This is the first finding that confirms that pregnancy develops in the uterus. Often this ultrasound finding is compared to a blood test called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin).

If the blood test is more than 2500, it is determined that the uterine cyst should be revealed.
Otherwise, laboratory measurements may vary and, if there are twins, hCG levels may not be the problem.
The main reason your provider may confirm an ectopic pregnancy when your HCG reaches 2500 is to rule out the possibility of an ectopic pregnancy.
This is a pregnancy that develops but does not implant in the uterine cavity. A pregnancy that implants outside the uterine cavity is called an ectopic pregnancy. An ectopic pregnancy is usually in the fallopian tube.
What Is A Due Date?
It is important to diagnose an ectopic pregnancy as soon as possible so that treatment can begin before the pregnancy grows larger and the tube ruptures.
Fetal heartbeat can be detected by ultrasound at 5 1/2 weeks. However, it is not unusual to not see a heartbeat before 6 or 7 weeks.
This discovery of the yolk sac confirms the presence of a developing embryo in the gestational sac. The yolk sac provides nutrients to the developing fetus until nutrients are provided by the placenta.
Between 5 1/2 and 6 1/2 weeks, the yolk sac and fetal pole can be seen by transvaginal ultrasound.
How To Tell When You Got Pregnant Or Conceived
As your pregnancy progresses from 7 to 12 weeks, the ultrasound date is no longer based on the gestational sac, fetal pole, or yolk sac. At this stage of your pregnancy, crown-rump length is the ultrasound measurement used to calculate your due date.
This is because second trimester ultrasound changes are more subtle from one week to the next than the dramatic changes that occur in the first trimester.
In the second trimester, an ultrasound is performed to determine the due date, measure the diameter of the head of the fetus (biparietal diameter) and other characteristics of the development of the fetus. The accuracy of these embryo growth parameters is accurate at just 11 days.
* The accuracy of ultrasound studies depends on the experience of the sonographer and the quality of the equipment.

Third trimester ultrasounds are less accurate and may have a margin of error of up to three weeks for the same reasons mentioned above. Changes in fetal growth from one week to the next during the third trimester are very short. Therefore, the specified date will not be correct.
That said, if you have your first prenatal appointment in the third trimester and your due date doesn’t match your last period, a third trimester ultrasound may be the only dating option.
If you have a regular 28-day menstrual cycle, there is a simple formula to quickly get an idea of when your due date is. Be sure to confirm your due date with your healthcare provider.

Assuming your last period is correct, there are two simple formulas using the first day of your last period:
If your menstrual cycle is 28 days and your provider calculated your due date based on your last menstrual cycle, then you got pregnant on day 14 of your last period. For many years, a baby was defined as “term” if it was born between 37 weeks 0 days and 41 weeks 6 days. Anything before these 5-weeks is considered “pre-period” and anything after these 5-weeks is considered “post-period”.
However, over time, studies have begun to show that health problems become more common at certain points during this 5-week “cycle.” In particular, newborns are more likely to die if they are born before 39 weeks or after 41 weeks (although the overall risk is still very low).
Births between 39 weeks and 0 days and 40 weeks and 6 days are less likely to cause neonatal complications (Sponge, 2013).
In 2012, a group of experts came together to determine the duration of pregnancy. Based on their review of research evidence, they divided the 5-week period into separate groups (Sponge, 2013).

Almost everyone, including doctors, midwives and online period calculators, uses Nagel’s Law (hear the pronunciation here) to calculate the estimated due date (EDD).
Nigel’s rule assumes that you have a 28-day menstrual cycle and that you ovulated on day 14 of your cycle (note: some healthcare providers will adjust your date to be longer or shorter than your menstrual cycle).
To calculate your EDD according to Nigel’s rule, add 7 days to the first day of your due date.
