Choosing exterior colors is hard…honestly it’s harder than choosing interior colors. You need to calculate the sun, time of day, gray reflection

, by ordering samples. Next, you’ll want to look at their outdoor patterns. Trust me when I say they don’t read inside like they do outside. If you’re looking for “white” exterior colors, I’d stay away from bright, clean, true whites. I know, I know…they’re great for indoors, but not great for outdoors because they look too bright in the sun. It’s almost hard to look away for too long. Instead, try a light gray or white color that stands out more in the outdoor environment. I landed on Nuance SW 7049 which is very creamy in the swatch book but looks very different outside my house. It really is a promise. If you are painting new and faded bricks, wait at least a year. This allows time to wash and weather. The condition of the brick depends largely on whether it has been painted, applied, or simply laid. Old rotting bricks, even in good condition, may need restoration. Bricks that look rotten or damaged will look better with a soft color that hides the imperfections.

I used a special veranda and floor glaze in Repose Green SW 7015, pictured below. I just went after it. It took about 20 minutes and is the easiest color I have ever applied. FYI – that’s not the texture…this is what our floor looked like before I painted it.

You need to consider several factors such as alkalinity, bloom, water and humidity. The best way to find out what is best for your brick is to talk to several experts.

Again, it totally depends on your brick, but generally for old, pitted or chipped brick in bad shape… you need a good primer and a smooth paint to hide the imperfections. I recommend Loxon concrete and masonry primer. For new nails that are at least 1 year old and in good shape and sound, I recommend Loxon Acrylic Conditioner. Cover it with an alkali-resistant coating such as Luxon Self-Cleaning Acrylic.
