Disclaimer – For those of you who hate the idea of painting any type of wood, this post is not for you. Anyway, please bear with me as I choose to restore the wood of a few pieces of furniture! The first step is to clean the furniture. It means removing dust or dirt and grease and other unknown substances. No matter what type of paint you use on your furniture, you should always clean the piece first! Below are two of the best ways to clean furniture before painting.
This type of soap is designed for wood (think floors, cabinets and furniture). The finish can be safely applied to the wood before cleaning and refinishing or painting. It comes in a pre-mixed spray bottle or in a stable form where you add a little water to make a solution. Whatever you choose to use, you add a little detergent to the cloth and wipe away any dirt or residue from your furniture.
How To Paint Furniture: A Beginner’s Guide
Mix 1/4 cup vinegar, 1/4 cup warm water, 1/2 teaspoon dish soap and a little olive oil. Mix it up, soak a cloth and use it on your furniture to clean it before painting.
Everyone always wants to know how to paint furniture without sanding. Chalk paint is the only paint I can think of for skipping sand steps. However, I have a habit of painting a little before I paint, like I do every time before I paint furniture. It really only takes five minutes and ensures that you have a smooth finish that adheres to the piece.
To lightly sand your furniture before painting, use 220 grit sandpaper to lightly sand the surface. A sanding sponge works well for this, but since they are expensive to buy new, I wrapped a piece of sandpaper cut in half around my old sanding blocks. Please note that you are not trying to remove the finish here. Roll the sand over the entire surface with light pressure from your hand. It is always better to sand along the grain of the wood.

There are three main types that work well for furniture – oil-based, shellac and water-based. Here is all the information about these types of furniture primers.
Need a primer with all your furniture paint? Yes, even “all-in-one” furniture paints (all brands!) sometimes need a primer. They can’t hide bleeds from wood or oil-based stains on furniture, so if you get any bleeds on your paint alone, you’ll need a more concealing primer ( full explanation in the post linked above).
There are many factors that go into the type of paint you should use for your furniture: cost, the look you’re trying to achieve, and the condition of your piece. Using a paint sprayer is a great way to make furniture easier, but if you’re new to painting furniture, you probably don’t have one. I know I didn’t! However, it’s easy to get a smooth finish on furniture using just a brush and foam roller.

Because I’m frugal, I buy expensive paint brushes to paint wooden furniture. I have used Zebra, Woodster Pro and Purdy brushes and they are all high quality and give you the best finish.
I like to use a 2.5″ angled sashing brush for furniture. This enables you to paint corners and angles well, but also flat surfaces.

When choosing a roller for painting furniture, you should choose the lowest setting for a smooth finish. This means you will need to apply an extra coat of paint as the roller will not hold as much paint. However, this is what you want to do (see my tips at the bottom of this post). I have used both foam rollers and 1/4″ knap rollers and have no choice between the two.
How To Paint Furniture With A Paint Brush Without Leaving Brush Marks
After the first coat of paint is dry (a few hours of dry time is usually enough, as long as you use a light coat as mentioned above), use 320-grit sandpaper to sand lightly. At this point, you can remove any drips or brush marks. Next, use an adhesive pad to remove any remaining dust. This step is the most important part of achieving a smooth finish on the furniture.
Depending on the type of paint you have chosen, you will need to use a top coat. My post above on the best type of paint for wood furniture breaks down which types of paint require a top coat, but for now, here are some guidelines general.
When choosing a coat, I always recommend using a coat made of water or wax. Oil-based coatings (such as polyurethane) tend to yellow over time, which does not work well with painted materials. Using a water-based polyurethane or acrylic clear coat gives your painted furniture a clear, durable finish that will help it withstand bumps and use. Furniture wax gives a hand and matte finish, but still protects the paint. I like to use wax when using milk paint or chalk paint because it compliments the natural, natural look of that type of paint.

By following the steps above you can easily upgrade any property! Below, you’ll find a few more tricks that will help you get the best results when painting your furniture.
Using less paint and painting a few light coats will end up giving a smoother finish. The less paint you have on your brush, the more evenly it will spread as it dries. In general, three light coats of paint are enough to cover your piece completely.
If you try to brush too much or the area is a little dry, you will make a lot of brush and stick mess when you try to paint. I get this especially with chalk paint as it dries very quickly. Just draw a line and that’s it.
