I recently tackled the process of coating my garage floor with Rust-Oleum’s RockSolid Garage Kit (with a dark gray finish) and I’m very happy with the results. I am sharing my experience along with the do’s and don’ts so you can approach this project with confidence.
Easiest Way To Paint Garage Floor
There are many reasons to lay out your flooring. The most obvious is the beauty it delivers. But still can provide excellent protection. Here are some short reasons. Find out why resurfacing your garage is a win-win.
Interior Paint Is The Best Choice For Your Garage Walls
Cleaning out the entire garage feels a little overwhelming… I decided to tackle each aspect one at a time to make this first step more manageable. It generally takes a few more days to separate this way. But it takes a little pressure. I took this picture after the second half was over. I can keep all my “things” in the garage and access them this way.
The first step in making this project a success is planning to make sure you start with a clean and well prepared floor. Like any project, PREP is the key to achieving sustainable results.
After cleaning half of the garage I sprayed the entire area with water to remove most of the dirt. (Thank goodness for these center drains!) Then I took rust remover and rust remover and poured it in at full force…followed by some serious scrubbing.
I’ll remind you that cleaning is the hardest part of this project. I’ve been playing for a while. but with my painting experience I know I shouldn’t take any shortcuts. with this step
Tips For Applying Garage Wall Paint
Then followed by concrete carving. Concrete can be too hard and slippery to handle paint or sealant…and that’s where the biting comes from. Etching uses mainly citric acid and acts to open the pores of the concrete and prepare the surface for further treatment. I mixed the milling solution as directed in an old jar and poured it over the clean concrete. I left it on for a few minutes and then proceeded with the light sanding again. The carving should do most of the work.
Make sure to re-spray the hose in the area and remove the etching debris from the floor. Using a floor squeegee really does get most of the water out of the concrete. to allow the concrete to dry properly…which is extremely important before the actual laying is performed.
My advice here is to wait at least 24 hours. I guarantee you won’t get the results you want unless your floor is completely dry… and it’s above 50 degrees. I use this surface thermometer to make sure the concrete. Mine is the right temperature.
Now comes the fun part…and the part where I have a lot of opinions on how to blend/paint for best results. I found that some bags are slightly different in color. So you can see in the video above that I mix 2 bags. This way you have the opportunity to get a nice and consistent color every time. I also found that using the recommended brush for the edges resulted in an uneven finish.
Garage & Basement Floor Paint Epoxy & Refinishing
I chose to roll the entire floor off the paint palette. (without using a brush) The instructions also recommend pouring it into a bag… I find it ineffective and leaves a streaky finish.
Note: You will need to tape the edges if you don’t plan on covering the edges with baseboard like I did.
After you’ve pulled off the 3-4′ section, it’s time to throw away the flakes! It’s important to do this while it’s still wet and you can get to where the trash is. My technique is to throw it up in the air and let it fall randomly! Skip this step if the glaze isn’t the look you want. (I wish I had done more) – will not affect the performance of the coating.
There are mixed opinions about how many coats you should wear. I think a good solid layer is enough.

I waited 24 hours and tried on the tacky spots before proceeding with the top coat. I used a textured clear topcoat and added russtoliium stabilizer. I followed the same process as the coating and just stirred this additive in… Be sure to stir as I paint as it needs to settle a bit. It’s almost like sand. Hence, it is important to mix well to have an even distribution.
I also decided to add a PVC baseboard after applying the topcoat to give it a neat look. I can’t believe how much difference this makes!
What is the difference? Here are some highlights if you want to remember the main points of this project.
I am very happy with the final result of the flooring. But I can tell you that I wanted to add more flakes and use a glossy finish instead of a matte one. Maybe I’ll do it in the spring/summer. Also, I’ve solved all the problems for you in this project. So you can make your garage look beautiful with peace of mind.
