You also need to remove cabinet doors and drawers to make painting easier. I started removing them with a screwdriver but soon switched to a drill, which made the process much faster. As with most painting projects, the secret to a good finish is to use multiple light coats, and I like to use a weeny roller for painting most of the cabinets. You will also need to use Zinser Bin Primer as your first two coats to make sure the paint adheres to the cabinet. BIN primer is very thin and smells great. I was able to avoid a mask this time because the windows were down and I was getting plenty of airflow, but you will probably need to wear a mask if you use this paint. The good news is that BIN primer dries very quickly. By the time you finish painting the first coat, you will probably be able to paint the second coat quickly.

Again, you want to paint a light, even coat as if you were primed. You can use a high quality synthetic or natural bristle brush to cut along the edge, but try to spray the paint so you don’t leave brush marks. Use a weenie roller with plenty of paint to ensure a professional finish. When you take a break from painting, be sure to wrap the tray in a plastic bag and store it in a cool place (refrigerator if possible) to prevent it from drying out. You can easily clean brushes and any spills with ammonia (it smells but works like a charm).
The second coat of primer should be even, but maybe only 80-90% opaque. As long as there are no drips, you should be ready to add a semi-gloss coat.
After the first coat is completely dry, you can start with the second coat. Some people prefer to sand between coats, but I don’t think you need to as long as you keep the first coat very light and there are no obvious drips. As you look at them, you can see the dried drops on the sand.
Most people will skip the next step before applying the semi-gloss, but I think it makes a difference. If you want a completely professional look, you will need to close the gap in the cabinets between the trim and the door. Inter doors look cheap and simple. I use DAP ALEX white paintable caulk. You can run a small bead in the area where the door and trim are connected. Then, dip your finger in water and run it down the crease, making sure to wipe off any caulk that runs down the sides. go away
