Ranch houses are native to the United States. Originally derived from buildings in the American Southwest in the 20s and 30s, Ranch Homes were found in rural areas, often…
Long, low farmhouses have deep eaves to shield the interior from the sun. They are made from natural materials such as local stone and terracotta to help with heat.

The buildings were on one floor and sometimes included a central courtyard with a wall of gates on the main building to connect the inside with the outside.
But after World War II, the early eco-style began to serve the nation’s need for swift, crowd-pleasing buildings during a housing boom.
Larger and more spacious than the older cabins built for the suburbs in the 1930s, the ranch took up more land on one side but still allowed for plenty of front and backyards. And the traditional playing style of the time gave way to the dramatic interpretations found in earlier styles.
Simple construction methods meant that it was easy to build ranch homes on the land, and this is where the ranch style originated. Each development has three or four styles to choose from and often shares interior and exterior details and finishes.

People wanted open floor plans, vaulted ceilings, multiple bedrooms and bathrooms, walls of patio doors that open out to expansive backyards, and even a swimming pool.
And they still are. Ranch homes are perfect for older buyers who don’t want to go overhead, don’t like stairs, or don’t want a lot of home maintenance. Anyone who has lived in a large, multi-story home knows that the labor and money required to own and maintain a home of that size is enormous. Ranch homes are a great solution for very large homes.
“Ranch” homes may be mid-century built (and most are), but not all homes are considered “modern” styles. Unfortunately, many realtors use these terms like keywords, making it difficult to understand what your home is.
Look at the roof what shape is it? Do you see shingles? If so, it’s probably a bunch. No, or maybe something modern if it’s too small.

Here’s a quick note to help you decide which approach to handle from an architectural perspective. It’s not perfect, but it can help a lot.
No wonder there is so much confusion about these mid-century home trends! Many new homeowners come to me seeking help with their struggling Mid-Mod. The reason they’re struggling is because they actually have a ranch.’ And they don’t see
This is often sad to hear and understand! Mid-Mods are popular, and it’s a huge disappointment to learn that there’s a “boring old bunch” out there. However, I think the charms are similar and there are more opportunities for each individual to develop their individuality.
What works well for one person may not translate to another. It is important to keep this in mind as you continue to make decisions.

Once you’ve decided that you have a mid-century ranch home that’s not mid-century, you can move on to finding a style for your home.
OK, back to you and your decision to buy the farm. Thank you, happy to have you!
Should you restore your new home to its former glory or turn it into a modern gem? Do you want to keep the current style and update the ugly part?
Unless it’s original or very unusual, it’s better to remodel rather than replace your ranch house, especially from a real estate standpoint. Technology from the 50s and 60s can’t stand up to the modern climate or today’s regulations. This doesn’t mean you can’t make a good first impression, just be smart about your choices.

Don’t think you have hidden architectural gems on your hands. Owning a farm means loving it not just because it’s spectacular, but for its quaintness and coziness. I like it not because it won a design award, but because of the spacious and nice floor plan.
However, it can be difficult to understand what you are actually dealing with. The original farmhouse has many improvements and many details over the years. Late farms may not have much to start with, which means retrofitting may or may not be possible.
Knowing the year a house was built can teach you a lot about building materials and methods. So, before starting a remodeling project or booking a demo team, start by setting a home construction date. If you haven’t registered your property, it’s a good idea to look at your market records. Construction date + your location can provide a lot of useful information.
Decide on the decoration style you already have. Don’t worry about deciding whether you like it or not. What’s trending today? If it hasn’t been carefully updated in decades, it will take some digging. (Scroll down for more common farm practices).
Paint Color Ideas For Craftsman Houses
If you’re having trouble figuring out what’s working and you live on a subdivision or block, walk around and look at other houses around you. This can help you see which parts of the house were original and which were added later. GoogleMaps is also a great tool for this! It’s like walking down the street and looking back over the years to see what has changed. If you know who built the house, tell me the story. Sometimes longtime neighbors will also know details about your home and help you understand the journey your home has taken.
If so, plan to keep it, get rid of things that no longer make sense after many years, and refresh what you need to keep.
Note: If you built a prairie style ranch in 1965, it doesn’t make sense to turn it into a 1950s storybook style home. It’s like trying to add a modern style to something like a 60’s French ranch. It looks wrong! Also, let us know what you need for your home. If you’re trying to combine something and it doesn’t work, it’s usually a sign that you’re not doing it the right way.
All ranch homes are unique, but there are a few patterns that belong to most ranch homes. I have listed eight common ones below.

Farmhouses built after the 70’s have none of these characteristics. In fact, the elaborately styled farmhouse is a perfect example of a mid-century construction date!
Homes built in the 1970s, 80s or 90s are generally considered more “modern” than ranch styles.
