How To Select Exterior Paint Colors
These Benjamin Moore classics are two of our favorite white paints. In fact, we named Benjamin Moore’s Seapearl as our exterior paint color of the year. With an LRV of 77.95, Seapearl is off-white. It’s only at LRV White 91.7, so it’s much brighter. (Learn what LRV is and why it’s important, especially with white paint.) While these same colors create a monochromatic palette, their contrasting tones bring subtle economic differences—between them. The plain white (painted here on the grid) creates a warm glow that both stands out and contrasts with the gray tones of the seapearl (painted on the brick).
Alabaster Sherwin Williams is a great choice for tile. This paint reads differently in color texture, so it’s a great choice for use on a variety of outdoor materials. Our designers used alabaster on the tile, trim and facade in the house image above. Going this route, we recommend adding some dimension and depth with dark paint accents like Sherwin Williams’ Tricorn Black. A black tricorn was used on the garage door and front door. Alabaster is not all white and it is not tricorn black, so it is not a solid black and white combination. This brick and paint combination is modern and dramatic.
This combination of warm soil and brick gives the front of the house a sense of unity. Instead of contrasting, these paint colors complement each other. The Olympic Mountains take center stage in the brick, Sandy Hook gray adorns the upholstery and cushions, and Simply White trim highlights complete the look.
Brick houses with orange clay tile roofs look fresh and modern when the tiles are painted beige or off-white. Such a unique roof should be the focal point of the exterior design and the red bricks can compete with it. One of the designers’ beige choices is Grant Beige by Benjamin Moore. In this example, Sherwin Williams’ Urban Bronze accents create depth and bridge the gap between the pale beige and saturated tile colors. (Urban Bronze by Sherwin Williams is one of our top Sherwin Williams exterior paint colors for 2021, largely because of its versatility.) Pro tip: Bronze or bronze gutters and downspouts look amazing with clay tile roofs and beige paint.
Colors That Go With Orange Brick Houses
#5 // ROMABIO’s Classico Limewash with Iron Mountain by Benjamin Moore and Natural Selection and Porcelain by Sherwin Williams
If you are dealing with tiles that have never been painted, you have the opportunity to try whitewashing. This beautiful effect gives your home an old historic feel, with brickwork still visible throughout. In the house above, our designer recommended the Classico Romabio in whitewash. Paint with warm tones complements warm brick. And this home has plenty of beautiful architectural elements to highlight with paint. Here, the designer suggested painted accents with Iron Mountain by Benjamin Moore and Natural Choice and Porpoise by Sherwin Williams.
It looks like you don’t need our permission, but as you can tell from our tips so far, we usually recommend using both Sherwin Williams and Benjamin Moore paints in the same design! When properly painted over pre-plastered tile, both brands work beautifully. Seapearl looks especially beautiful on brick because the brick facades are white and the cracks between the bricks appear gray, giving the interior construction dimension. On this home, painting the entire exterior brickwork in Sherwin Williams Iron Ore and accents and trim in Benjamin Moore Onyx provides rich, deep contrasts and enhances the gray tones. .
If you’re keeping natural red brick, gray trim can give it a sleek look. This is one of the best tile and paint color combinations in our book. In fact, many natural bricks have gray and beige spots, and grout is often gray from a distance. Paint your decor with Benjamin Moore’s Sandy Hook Gray to bring out these tones.
Exterior Paint Colors
With little paint, mixed materials act as allies rather than rivals. This home features additional brick, siding, and natural stone—all beautiful materials, but the color palette feels somewhat overwhelming to the eye. In this situation, matching tiles and the right paint color can make all the difference. By painting the brick in Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter neutral canvas, our designers allowed for natural details.
